how are you guys doing it? are you sending a letter in the mail or are you emailing them telling them you are ranking them #1, high, etc...?

I really would like to do both just to make sure they get my message. but at the same time i do not want to annoy them and cause them to do nothing or move me down the list.

How are you guys doing it?

I went the hand-written way. I've only done that with my #1 program. I have been contacted by other PDs via e.mail and have replied in kind, but I've only sent a note indicating that I feel that X program is the best fit for me to my #1.
 
I would have done handwritten, but my advisor (a PD) said it was getting a little to late to do that, and recommended e-mail instead.

She also recommended that whatever you do, don't call. PD's are usually busy people, and getting interrupted every few minutes can be pretty frustrating.

I was going to do a handwritten note to my top 3, but as mentioned above, it's getting pretty late in the season. I just finished interviewing this week, and a faculty member at my home program recommended email since a lot of places are finalizing their rank lists now.
