I was speaking to a few D4 students who go to a school I am trying to get into. I haven't recieved an invite from this school yet. They advised me to email the admissions director about my applicaion and express my interest in the school. They were adamant that it would be okay. I'd like your opinions. I feel like this strategy could backfire.

What do you have to lose?

Still a little early in the game.
Wait it out a little longer before emailing.

He or she risks waiting and then getting a rejection letter. Then at that point, it cannot be undone. Rejection letters don't have a scheduled time. They can come at any time.

Ok one thing I learned as the cycle goes on is that if it was meant to happen, it will happen. And that saying applies to everything in life too. I believe that they adcoms wont change their mind from rejection to acceptance just because they receive your letter about your application. And the adcoms dont sit there all day everyday to look at application. They have some days and some times so it takes sometimes to get to everyone's application.

But that being said, if it gives you and others a piece of mind, you can email them all you want.

After speaking to more D4 students I decided I would send them an email. One of the students told me he emailed all the admissions directors constantly. This program is my top choice and I want to be able to see I did everything I could to get in. We didn't get this far by sitting passively.

Exactly! One person I know who got in did the same and then eventually spoke to the Dean on the phone. Phone conversation went well and lasted almost half an hour. Next day this person was accepted. Remember, some people have the power to make things happen fast and others do not. Good luck to you.

In my opinion it definitely would not hurt to email them. But just curious, what exactly would be appropriate to say without sounds desperate?

Sent a email of interest for stony brook around oct, gave them an update on what i have been doing, and got an interview later that day.

Out of curiosity, what did you say in your update? Just more volunteering/shadowing?

The D4 I was talking to told me he was pretty close to the Admissions director and told me to drop his name. I don't know how appropriate it would be, but at this point I'm willing to do what I need to for an interview.

Yeah I feel you there! I'm pretty much in the same position as you. I have heard before that it could be a plus to stay in contact with admissions, but I have no idea what to even bring up or say to them, ya know?

and how they were my first choice, which was true. I was already in contact with admissions too.
