Emergency Medicine Songs

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What the nurses sing when a couple of particular regulars are being wheeled in on a gurney:
I here you knocking...but u can't come in

My favorite thing to listen to during breaks: Renagade by the styx

I am (in)famous for playing the song "Spirit in the Sky" when an aeromedical helicopter was landing....of course this was in a military ED that had a Doors poster above the door: "Five to one, one in five, no one here gets out alive"

I have an iTunes playlist called "Chief Complaints." It features such songs as...

Accidents Will Happen..........Elvis Costello
Blinded By the Light.............Manfred Mann
Broken Head.......................the Catherine Wheel
Cocaine Blues.....................Johnny Cash
Gimme Stitches...................Foo Fighters
In the Blood........................Better Than Ezra
Little Gunshots....................Trembling Blue Stars
Panic Attack.......................Atmosphere
Paralyzed...........................Bob Mould
The Bends..........................Radiohead

...and many more!

How could you leave out the classic shot through the heart... - Bon Jovi

Gotta love givin' love a bad name. 😎

It's on my running playlist on my ipod. Reminds me of a certain trauma rotation where the senior surgery resident would whip out his phone/ipod/palm and blast trauma-appropriate songs to get us pumped while waiting for the alert to arrive.

It's not on my Ipod, but I can't get the song "Borderline" out of my head when I'm talking to my psych patients. One of my psych residents always used to sing that on rounds and she somehow cursed me forever by lodging it in my subconcious, only to come out when I'm talking to one of my crazies....

I recently had a patient ask for promethazine. This guy looked like a gang-banger and had an IQ of about 60 from lead poisoning. I think it was the only 4 syllable word he knew. Aparently it is featured in some recent hip-hop lyrics

Fat Joe - Make It Rain
"Couple Bricks Stacked up on that triple beam, my dirty bro sippin that promethazine"

Urbandictionary.com:
"promethazine is purple drank comin mainly from Houston, TX. its basically cough syrup that u mix w/ either a bottle of soft drink(whichever u prefer, usually sprite of any sort)that, or u mix w/ alcohol. and it gives u a leaned out kinda feelin, its how us texan folkz get throwed ya heard?"

"Lit up" by Buckcherry.

Just listen to it and you'll understand.

There is a road back home (Greencastle Road) where there is a tree in the middle of the road. Why....I'm not sure, but they built the road around this big old oak tree. We averaged 1-2 wrecks there per year, mostly people who are drunk and come around the corner and BAM!

What the hell does this have to do with anything you might ask? We (the fire department) pulled up to a wreck there once blaring "That Smell" by Lynyrd Skynyrd.....

Whiskey bottles and brand new cars
Oak tree you're in my way,
there's too much coke and too much smoke,
look what's goin' on inside you.....
ooooh oooooh That smell,
can't you smell that smell
ooooh that smell
the smell of gas around you......

Angel of darkness is upon you
Stuck a needle in your arm
take another toke, have another blow for your nose
one more drink fool would drown you

ooooh oooooh That smell,
can't you smell that smell
ooooh that smell
the smell of gas around you......

Now they call you prince charming,
but you can't speak a word when you're full of 'ludes
say here we are, alright come tomorrow
but tomorrow might not be here for you

ooooh oooooh That smell,
can't you smell that smell
ooooh that smell
the smell of gas around you......

Oh, you're a fool you
goin' stickin' those needles in your arms....
I know....I've been there before......

One little problem that confronts you
got a monkey on your back
just one more fix, Lord, might do the trick
your life is one hell of a price to get your kicks

ooooh oooooh That smell,
can't you smell that smell
ooooh that smell
the smell of death's around you......
ooooh oooooh That smell,
can't you smell that smell
ooooh that smell
the smell of gas surrounds you......

Oh, you're a fool
don't stick those needles in your arms
you're just a fool, just a fool, just a fool
give me....one more, one more blow for my nose.....

Anyone for "Harder to breathe" by Maroon 5?

ok so mine are a lil cynical, forgive me, i work in an urban county ED and just finished a month of q3 trauma...

My Baby Daddy - B Rock and the Bizz -- where is its cousin "my babymomma"... cause of many ED presenting complaints from stab wound to vag dc to the real reason you brought your kid in at 2am for a nonexistent fever...

Can You Fill Me In? - Craig David.... as in why are you here at 3am with itchy toe x 6 months, just tell me what you really want and get it over with

High Enough - Damn Yankees... as in i'm so glad my ED doesn't hand out demerol or more than 20 vics. i will however direct you to a social worker if you'd like.

Breathe - Fabolous.... i don't know the maroon5 one.

How about Depeche Mode's "Fly on the Windscreen?"

Death is everywhere
There are flies on the windscreen
For a start
Reminding us
We could be torn apart
Tonight

Death is everywhere
There are lambs for the slaughter
Waiting to die
And I can sense
The hours slipping by
Tonight

Come here
Kiss me
Now

(etc.)

Other possibilities:

Robert Palmer - "Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)"

Doctor, doctor, give me the news
I've got a bad case of lovin' you
No pill's gonna cure my ill
I've got a bad case of lovin' you

Pink - "Just Like a Pill"

I can't stay on your life support, there's a shortage in the switch
I can't stay on your morphine, cuz it's making me itch
I said I tried to call the nurse again, but she's being a little bitch
I think I'll get outta here, where I can

Run just as fast as I can
To the middle of nowhere
To the middle of my frustrated fears
And I swear, you're just like a pill
Instead of makin' me better, you keep makin' me ill
You keep makin' me ill

or Alanis Morissette's "Not the Doctor"

Visiting hours are 9 to 5, and if I show up at 10 past 6
Well I, already know that you'd find some way to sneak me in, and oh
Mind the empty bottle with the holes along the bottom
You see it's too much to ask for, and I am not the doctor

😉

Some of my faves. Some not exactly medical, but definitely could be part of the "soundtrack" of the ED- great thread!

:luck: MJ

My Baby Daddy - B Rock and the Bizz

I really have a hard time believing anyone in-cohoots with "the Bizz" and with a song named "My BabyDaddy" even nearly approximates something close to "Rock..." maybe I'm wrong.

As for my own personal tastes, if it isn't hard rock or metal, don't even come close to me. The angrier and more violent, the better it makes me feel, especially after a loooooooonnnnnnngggg day. I'm digging on some of DKMs selections.

I'm really a nice person. Really I am. :meanie:

And other recommendations:

Ride the Lightning - Metallica (surprised noone's come up with this)
Creeping Death - Metallica
Pantera - Cemetery gates, Walk, Cowboys from Hell
Megadeth - A Tout Le Monde
A Perfect Circle - Passive
Tool - Prison Sex (for those really bad shifts), StinkFist (same reason)
The Ramones - (Gimme) shock treatment
The Misfits - Green Hell
... others I can't come up with right now

Someday I'm going to intro a club/rec drug lecture with Placebo's 'Special K'

delaughter, i'm assuming you haven't heard this song...???? b/c the "artist" doesn't really matter! it's all about the "who dat is, that's just my babydaddy"...

We have an attending who starts his annual cocaine chest pain lecture with a little Eric Clapton number.

Ahh and then there is Queens "Another one bites the dust"

Oh wait, on second thought maybe thats best not put in the playlist.

A lot of songs by Third Eye Blind have some medical content or remind me of medical things in them and I've wondered what the writers backgrounds are. BTW, may seem like I'm a freak fan of theirs or something. I'm not really, I've always just wondered if someone in the group was a paramedic or something.

Here are a couple of their songs lyrics

JUMPER
(Jenkins)

I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,
You could cut ties with all the lies, that you've been living in,
And if you do not want to see me again, I would understand.
I would understand,
The angry boy, a bit too insane,
Icing over a secret pain,
You know you don't belong,
You're the first to fight, You're way too loud,
You're The flash of light, On a burial shroud,
I know something's wrong,
Well everyone I know has got a reason, To say, put the past away,

I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,
You could cut ties with all the lies, That you've been living in,
And if you do not want to see me again, I would understand,
I would understand.

Well he's on the table, And he's gone to code,
And I do not think anyone knows,
What they are doing here,
And your friends have left, You've been dismissed,
I never thought it would come to this, And I, I want you to know,
Everyone's got to face down the demons,
Maybe today, We can put the past away,

I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,
You could cut ties with all the lies, that you've been living in,
And if you do not want to see me again, I would understand,
I would understand,
I would understand...

Can you put the past away, I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,

I would understand...

BURNING MAN
(Jenkins, Cadogan)

The rise and fall of my sloppy love, the smatterings, and splatterings,
They'll get you.
I'm not the one you were thinking of,
Maybe you thought I'd call, Instead of crashing down your hall.
Hold me down, I wanna find out.
You know you will never get what you.....need,
Blue Diamond strike 'em anywhere,
First we caffeinate, then incinerate,
We'll get you.
And sparks will fly in the summer air,
Did you pull out of your stall,
Maybe I'll see you after all.
Hold me down, I wanna find out
We say no,

Cause I live my life like the burning man,
Like a burning man,
Like a burning man,
A burning man
Like a burning man
And I won't get enough until my legs are broken,

The rise and fall shining in a void (Not sure about this line)
Life is not to fear, life is to enjoy,
He'll get you.
Oh Mr. Death catches all someday.
Baby I thought you'd call.
Or leave a light on in the hall,
Hold me down, But I'll find out. We say no,

Cause I live my life like a burning man,
Like a burning man,
A burning man,
Like a burning man,
Hold me down, I wanna find out,
We say no,

Cause I live my life like a burning man,
Like a burning man,
A burning man,
Like a burning man,
And I won't get enough,
Until my legs are broken

NARCOLEPSY
(Jenkins, Cadogan)

I'm on a train, but there's no one at the helm,
And there's a demon in my brain starts to overwhelm...,
And there it goes, my last chance for peace,
You lay me down, but I'll get no release,
And I say I,

I try to keep awake, I try to swim beneath,
I try to keep awake,
But I can feel this narcolepsy slide,
Into another nightmare.

And there's a demon in my head who starts to play,
A nightmare tape loop of what went wrong yesterday,
And I hold my breath 'till it's more than I can take,
And I close my eyes I dream that I'm awake,

I try to keep awake,
I try to keep awake,
I try to keep awake,
But I can feel this Narcolepsy slide, into another nightmare.

I read dead Russian authors, Volumes at a time,
I write everything down except what's on my mind,
Cause my greatest fear is the sucking sound,
And then I know that I will never get back out,

And there's a bone in my hand that connects to a drink,
In a crowded room where the glasses clink,
And I'll buy you a beer and we'll drink it deep,
Because that keeps me from falling asleep,

I said, how'd you like to be alone and drowning,
How'd you like to be alone and drowning,
How'd you like to be alone and drowning,
How'd you like to be all alone and drowning,
Still I find this narcolepsy slide slides, Into another nightmare,

Keep awake. Keep awake, Keep awake,

And I can feel this narcolepsy slide...

WOUNDED
(Jenkins, Cadogan)

The guy who put his hands on you
Has got nothing to do with me
And the bruises that you feel will heal
And I hope you'll come around
Cause we're missing you
And you used to speak so easy
Now you're afraid to talk to me

It's like walking with the wounded
Carrying that weight way too far
Concrete pulled you down so hard
Out there with the wounded
We're missing you
Well I never claimed to understand what happens after dark
But my fingers catch the sparks at the thought of touching you
When you're wounded

Let me break it down till I force the issue
We miss your face, you know I wish you
Would come back down to the Dalva Bar
You tell them, that's just my battle scar
I want to kiss you
And knock 'em down like we used to
You're the marigold
Till you're walking down shaking that ass again
And then you walk on baby walk on you walk on
On and on

You're an angel in the pit with her hands in the air
And we're missing you

Now it's fall, and your shoulders get tighter
Nervous flicks on the lighter, boots
Your pissed off poets, your women's groups
And the friends with you, we should have known this fool
Well I guess we missed the mark
Still my fingers catch the sparks at the thought of
Them touching you

Now you're wounded

Let me break it down till I force the issue
You never come around, and you know we miss you
Well nobody took your pride away
I said that's something people say
Back down the bully to the back of the bus
Cause it's time for them to be scared of us
Till you're yelling, how we living cause you got the ball
Then you rock on baby, rock on, you rock on

On and on

You're a summer time hottie with her socks in the air
Screaming I don't care baby I don't care hey

You say you don't know
You say you can't grow (You're the marigold)
All I know is we're missing you
You say you don't know
You say you can't grow (You're the marigold)
All I know is we're missing you
Show up
Show up wounded
Show up
Show up wounded

10 DAYS LATE
(Jenkins, Salazar)

Click your heals and feel you come for me
Care free, she's got something big to tell me

At the ocean, talk back at the ocean

There's no simple way to let you know
Funny how she always cried out daddy

I got a big surprise
She said, I'm in trouble now and it cannot wait
She's ten days late
Boy your life got complicated
Well I can't wait to see this through
She's ten days late
Ten days late

Low ride bicycles go cruising by
I laugh, I don't even know why

Talk back at the ocean

Consequence and ozone catch a glow
Ah ah, oh no baby, oh no no

Give me a minute now to figure out my state
Oh I know she's ten days late
And I don't know where to take it
But it's still great knowing you
She's ten days late
Ten days late

(choir)
Time has come for you to choose
Baby daddy keep your boo
Many blessings come to you
Baby daddy keep your boo
Baby daddy keep your boo
Baby daddy keep your boo

Your eyes looked at me for what to do
I can't lie, ah ah, I don't know

At the ocean, talk back at the ocean

No one's laughing now what do I say
I walk away but oh,
No don't go

At the ocean, talk back at the ocean

Give me a minute now to figure out my state
She's ten days late
And I'm never going to fade it
I guess I'll always be knowing you
Knowing you
Knowing you
Crawl up, the bedpost

THE RED SUMMER SUN
(Jenkins, Cadogan)

There's a big red sky
Over you and I
And it's coming down
And we're pumping over ground
In desert air
I hope you'll be there
Cause it's coming down
Pumping over ground

I've seen car wreck kids
Walk away from it
I laughed from within
I know these days will end

Been a long time, been a long time
To walk with the mighty
Walk with the mighty
Let me go, let me go
On my own road, said
Been a long time, been a long time
To walk with the mighty
Walk with the mighty
Let me go, let me go
On now rock on

I'll make do with none
I will blame no one
Slept on packing foam
I'll make it all my home
Take on anyone
I'll take on anyone
I'll take on anyone
I'll take on anyone
I'll take on, take on anyone, I'll
Take on anyone
I'll take on anyone
I'll take on, I will take on anyone
I'll take on anyone
I'll take on anyone, I'll

Been a long time, been a long time
To walk with the mighty
Walk with the mighty
Let me go, let me go
With the martyr, go
Been a long time, and I won't
I will walk with the mighty
I'm gonna walk with the mighty
Let me go, let me go
On my own so

Take on anyone
I'll take on,
I'll take on anyone
I'll take on,
I'll take on anyone
I'll take on anyone, I'll

These days, they're not done, no
These days, they're not done
See the red summer sun
These days, they're not done
The red summer sun
The red summer sun

SLOW MOTION
(Jenkins)

Miss Jones taught me English
But I think I just shot her son
Cause he owed me money
With a bullet in the chest you cannot run
Now he's bleeding in a vacant lot
The one in the summer where we used to smoke pot
I guess I didn't mean it but man you shoulda seen it
His flesh explode

Slow motion see me let go
We tend to die young
Slow Motion see me let go
What a brother knows
Slow Motion see me let go

Now the cops will get me
But girl if you would let me
I'll take your pants off
I got a little bit of blow we could both get off

Later bathing in the afterglow
Two lines of coke I cut with Drano
An her nose starts to bleed
A most beautiful ruby red

Slow motion see me let go
We'll remember these days
Slow motion see me let go
Urban life decays
Slow motion see me let go

And at home
My sister's eating paint chips again
Maybe that's why she's insane
I shut the door to her moaning
And I shoot smack in my veins
Wouldn't you?
See my neighbour's beating his wife
Because he hates his life
There's an arc to his fist as he swings
Oh man what a beautiful thing
And death slides close to me
Won't grow old to be
A junkie wino creep

Hollywood glamorised my wrath
I'm a young urban psychopath
I incite murder
For your entertainment
Cuz I needed the money
What's your excuse?
The jokes on you

Slow motion see me let go
Slow motion see me let go
Slow motion see me let go

DARWIN
(Jenkins, Salazar)

The chromosome divides
Multiply and thrive
And the strong survive
And the strong survive
And a spaceman ****ed an ape
Then cut out on the date
And now it's much too late
The space ship has escaped

(Where'd it go?)

We're lacking something, good, something good
Is this all for nothing
Good, something good
Boom tick tick and who skipped the long play
Tick, tick, boom

The chromosome divides
Multiply and thrive
And the strong survive
Yeah the strong survive
And the grandson of an alien
Wears his snake skin boots
Shows his reptile roots
He shows his reptile roots

We're lacking something, something good, something good, yeah
Is this all for nothing, yeah
Show me the goods, something good, yeah

Boom boom tick tick and who skipped the long play
Who skipped the record and who amped what you say
I want to sing a song that's my own
I want to be the DJ

We're lacking something, something good, something good, yeah
Is this all for nothing, yeah
Show me the goods, something good, yeah

The chromosome divides
Multiply and thrive
And the strong survive
Yeah the strong survive
Chromosome divides
Multiply and thrive
And the strong survive
And the strong survive

And it's alright, it's alright, yeah
It's a long night, it's a long night
A long night, it's a long night
It's a long night, a long night
A long night, a long night
It's a long night
Alright, alright, alright

When the plane takes off you know it
When the plane takes off you know it
When the plane takes off you know it

"My Hit And Run"

Feel the speed through the intersection
Sheets of rain I seek out cars
Hands in gloves grip handlebars

Ride alone to the pub in the dark
I get a little wet but I don't have to park
And the lights start flashing green and red as I ride
A car turns left and I slide
I can't turn back
I make contact
Blinkers smash into mosaic
Then I start flying

Always think we get more time
Now flying through the air
Maybe living maybe dying
In this motor crash it's you who comes to mind
Don't we always wish had more time

I'm thrust slow mo through time and space
Details smash and
I protect my face
And then I see yours
And go to a time when we just knew

Mister death in the car below
Doesn't even slow
And away he goes
In the majesty of a motor crash
You skid into my darkness forming
Sex and death, heartbreak and strife
But I give no warning

[Chorus]

Here it comes, my hit and run

Come down hard and roll to my feet
And rain washes blood now off concrete
People turn away and I just had to laugh
Cause I'm still flying
Living and dying

[Chorus]

And I'd like to thank mister death for what he's done
Cause I got to walk away from my hit and run
Mysteries are not so empty
Cause I saw you
At my hit and run

-Mike

delaughter, i'm assuming you haven't heard this song...???? b/c the "artist" doesn't really matter! it's all about the "who dat is, that's just my babydaddy"...

nope, haven't heard it, not really interested. See my post.

We have an attending who starts his annual cocaine chest pain lecture with a little Eric Clapton number.

Another good one for that would be "White Line" by Duran Duran.😀

going back awhile "Insane in the membrane" Cypress Hill

Or, speaking of Disturbed, there is "Voices," another great ROCKIN song

"Give Me Back My Bullets"- Lynyrd Skynyrd
"Gotta Serve Somebody"- Bob Dylan
"Crazed Country Rebel"- Hank Williams III (the song is nothing but drug references)
"Rise"- Disturbed
"Fade to Black"- Metallica (although the live Disturbed cover on "Music as a Weapon II" is FAR better)

Not quite the ED, but Deathcab for Cutie's "What Sarah Said" is about someone dying in the ICU.

Hey -amazing what great posts can accumulate over a call night (these suck, BTW). Glad to see I am not alone in relating EM to music. Here are some of the many songs on my "Emergency Medicine" playlist:

"Hands" by Jewel,"Lean on Me" by Kirk Franklin, and "What if God were one of us"- cause I like taking care of people who are down and out

"When the Sun goes down" by Kenny Chesney and "Night Shift" by Lionel Richie - because night shifts are fun

"SOS" by Rihanna and "Fireman" by Lil Wayne (and the mission impossible theme) - cause I like emergencies

"B!tch Please" by Snoop, "I'm a King" by P$C and "Shorty wanna ride" by Young Buck - these songs remind me of what Panda Bear says about EM being the dangerous-looking thug dating and impregnating your daughter; not to mention reminding me of some of the patients

"Don't Matter" by Akon, "Cool Jerk" by The Capitols (people look at me like I'm a fool, but deep down inside, I KNOW I'm cool 😀) and "I ain't Mad at cha" by Tupac for the haters that look down on EM or question my choice

"Lose my Breath" by Destiny's Child- reminds of how I get bored doing IM, etc (can you keep up, make me lose my breath? [Nope])

"In the Deep" by Bird York (from Crash) - is my song for feeling sorry for people for what their life turned out to be, esp those caught in vicious cycles

"24/7" by Kevon Edmonds,"We Belong together" by Mariah Carey, and "Lifetime" by Maxwell - depict how I think about EM all the time and think it's a great fit for me.

"I'm a Flirt" by R. Kelly - because I've liked almost every rotation in med school and people keep thinking I'm going into their field

"My 1st Song" by Jay-Z. This is my theme song - it's about working as hard as you have to and being as persistent as you need to be to get what you want

I listen to my playlist on the way to/from bad rotations or when I am feeling discouraged. Will probably be adding to it now, thanks all!

And, of course, The Ramones' "I Wanna Be Sedated." 🙂

That's my personal favorite. There is no way on God's green earth I can do a procedural sedation without this in my head.

Fortunately, since it seems I do several a shift, I actually like the Ramones.

Unfortunately for my waistline, I also have an unalterable association between anything Ramones and thin NY style cheese pizza. I get hungry everytime I see propofol.

Take care,
Jeff

Munchies, much?

If you do CPR compressions to the beat of "staying alive" by the Bee Gees you hit almost exactly 100/ minute

I was told that Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust" is a good CPR song, and it worked for me once... in terms of tempo, I mean, not so much the lyrics. It's 110 bpm according to the internet, whereas it would seem that "Stayin' Alive" is exactly 100.

Now then, how many chest-compression-doing trauma bay denizens have been in a band, or played an instrument, and can tell if they're on tempo or not? That's the 1000-milligram question...

I'd have thought that would be Chumbawumba's "I Get Knocked Down (Tubthumping)." 🙂

"...but I get up again..."

Trouble is, ours didn't (see my thoughts on intubating people in the Trauma Bay in the Clinical Rotations thread). 😀

Now then, how many chest-compression-doing trauma bay denizens have been in a band, or played an instrument, and can tell if they're on tempo or not? That's the 1000-milligram question...

I was in a code in the CCU once and one of the stat nurses had that song as their cell ring and it went off during the code! 😱 And the family was sitting right there! 😳 Luckily it was an older man and I don't think he was that familiar with Queen.

AC/DC's Highway to Hell is also a good song to put you in the right speed when doing CPR. 😀

One of our CCM docs back home had "Don't Fear the Reaper" as his ring tone....I waited for THAT to go off during a code, but it never did 🙁
