I know that there have been numerous posts concerning which EMG machine is preferable. I am inquiring about obtaining a machine either purchase or lease preferrably a Viking portable. I have searched the web and found some info. Does anyone have a contact for information or someone they recommend. Thank you. Greatly appreciated!

The Nicolet (Cardinal Health) machines tend to run a little higher than XL-Tech or Cadwell, but obviously are great machines.

I have purchased XL-tech and Cadwell (Sierra Wave for the past 9 yrs) and have always gone directly through the company. Talk to your accountant about whether purchase or lease is better for you.

If your organization has a purchase agreement with a vendor for Cardinal Health, then the Viking might be a better deal, which is why we often see them in academic centers or hospital owned clinics. (Cardinal does lots of telemetry monitors/cath lab stuff)

Thank you for your post. I do not have any contacts or agreements. My intent is to moonlight performing EMG's during my fellowship. I have attempted to search for contacts for Viking but have been unsuccessful. I have emailed and called various sales reps but have not received any call backs or information. Any recs??

I think that would be very difficult to do since most practices don't have evening hours or weekends, unless your fellowship will let you take time off during business hours to moonlight.

As mentioned in a previous thread, EMG's are lucrative and it is fairly easy to find a physiatirst or neurologist (or even a FP or chiro ) ) who will do them.

If you want to moonlight, you might have better luck looking for a PM&R practice looking for inpatient coverage on the weekend.

That kind of EMG setup would be hard to arrange during the normal business hours of your fellowship. If you're worried about losing your EMG skills, talk to your fellowship director about integrating some EMGs into your fellowship or at least observing some during the year.

As far as making money, most cities of any size have rehab hospitals that could use weekend PMR coverage, and pay decently for it (compared to fellowship salary).

One nice thing about many of those gigs is that after you've rounded, they just pay you to be there at the hospital which gives you time to study for boards and for fellowship while you're getting paid.

I think you misunderstand what moonlighting is - you are picking up a service that someone else doesn't want to do. EMG's are desirable and competitive. I doubt you will find moonlighting for it. Discuss with you fellowship director what you can do to practice EMG's in the appropriate department, but you may find resistance as Residents also need the practice and training.

Agree with everyone above re: moonlighting opportunities. EMG reimbursements are very good, and there is NO way I would let anyone horn in on those. With regards to viable moonlight opportunities, you could certainly consider shifts on an inpatient ward like most everyone here has suggested.

There is an organization called MDSI that needs physicians essentially for IMEs for disability. They take residents, and depending on location, will pay anywhere from 50-100$ per patient seen (up to 10-14 patients/day). It can be scheduled on a weekend. They will even pay for airfare and hotel per diem for travel within the same state. Look them up on google, or if interested, let me know and I can track down the contact number for them.
