Emory Class of 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey Scrubs386,

I'm trying to decide. Do you know if the competition is really as bad as everyone says? All hype? I really want to attend, but I don't think I will do very well in a crazy cut throat place. I really liked all the students at my interview, but they were still in the pass fail part of their class.

i think the competition thing will be a lot better now that they have switched to p/f for the first two years.

i want to go here sooo badly!! but i've been passed over for oct, nov, and dec...

Hi Scrubs,

I was just curious how you found out that they switched to P/F??

it was mentioned at our interview and someone's post in the pre-allo forum reminded me of it the other day.

Thanks Scrubs,

Are you going to second look weekend??? The Atlanta film fest is going on, and my wife and I want to get a bunch of people to go see a flick over the weekend.

I got in over xmas and was really excited (and still am)

I can't wait for the second look because I'm a little bit torn between Emory and Tulane (80% Emory and 20% Tulane). I did love NOLA but I feel like I'd have too many distractions. I'm an hour from ATL so I know what it entails also.

I can't wait for the second look w/e because really the only thing I'm worried about is the students and competition issue but I think the first 2 years P/F will help. Anyways, congrats to everyone! Hoping someone starts a Facebook group.

Rabid,

Congrats on getting in....My cousin went to Tulane and really loved it. He is doing a med onc fellowship in maidson, wi currently. But I say go to Emory. I am worried asbout the comp thing too.

Hey guys. I'm almost 100% sure on Emory. I'm still so excited about my acceptance. I live in the area and actually work in a lab at Emory now, so I was kind of iffy about staying in the same place for four more years, but the interview really impressed me. I'm not really worried about the competition. Maybe I'm completely wrong, but I thought they told us only the first semester would be pass/fail. Or maybe they just changed it after feedback from the class. From talking to the students no one seemed cut throat at all. The only thing I'm a little concerned about is how smoothly the new curriculum will go since we'll be only the second class to go through it. Of course a lot of things about the new program sound great (i.e. less lecture time!) After all the work we've done to get in, I'm just so ready to get started. Hope to see y'all in the fall.

I'll definitely be at Second Look. Can't wait to see all of you there!

Emory was very impressive! I am highly looking forward to the second look weekend 🙂.

Yeah... I guess I'm just extra AMPED because I just got an interview on the VERY LAST DAY!! Lol... wish me luck!

Hey guys! I just got in, and will almost definitely be attending (unless I get some ridiculous scholarship at my state school which is highly unlikely) Can't wait til second look! (even though I live 10 minutes away!)

I just got in! I'm super excited. I cant wait until second look.

Emory's great...but I went there for undergrad. I'm almost looking for a reason to stay and NOT got to NYC.

whoa... congrats! when was your letter dated? i thought they didn't go out til the 26th...

Since a couple of people have asked me about I figured I would just post the info. I didn't get a letter yet (I believe they still go out next week). Sorry to scare all the people that are waiting. I got a call from the assistant dean last night after the committee meeting was over. Thats how I found out.

Good luck to everyone that is waiting. Emory is amazing!

When exactly is their official revisit weekend?

Its not really a weekend, but a Thursday and Friday. April 24 & 25! I'm stoked!

i don't know if anyone actually still follows this thread...
but FWIW emory has posted its FA info on OPUS

good luck all

can't wait.
Anyone know when the housing weekend is? (not to be confused with second look). I heard that's where most people find roomates/housing

What's the grading system at Emory? I know it's currently letter grades, but I read that they're switching/have switched to Pass/Fail

At second look the deans said they're planning to keep it pass/fail for all of preclinical, and that they will not calculate rank.

I'm bringing this thing back! Pass/fail for two years is amazing - I'm so glad that's the new wave of the future. If no one minds me asking about finances with totally innocent motivations, did anyone get only loans from Emory? I'm wrestling with the idea of going to a private lender... at 10-15% it's pretty scary out there these days. Does anyone think it'll cost up to $70000 to attend for a year? The budgets for NYC schools are way lower, so this is hard to wrap my mind around...

MMCNAM,
I also got only loans but I dont think the interest rates are as high as you say. If you qualified for Stafford then the interest is 6.8 percent. The grad plus loan which covers the remainder is 8 or so percent interest. Also remember that they make the cost of attendance as high as possible to get you the most amount of loan money. You can probably live in Atlanta for less than 22k a year. Also the health insurance is expensive compared to other policies out there. Check out Wachovia they seemed to have pretty good deals on federal loans as well the arrangement Emory has with Citibank posted on the FA webpage. Hope that helped.

i guess i assumed i'd have to go to a private lender for the remainder of my loans, but i guess that's not the case? i knew stafford loans were fixed at 6.8% but i didn't know that grad plus loans are used to cover the rest. thanks for the info...
