Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone here can answer the question of whether Emory's Internal Medicine or Med/Peds program was DO friendly. And if they are, about how many DOs they take each year?

Thanks

...whose husband is a PM&R resident there, I know. This forum and thread deal with Internal Medicine.

if your scores are high enough it will be

Outstanding scores do not always equate to enhanced perception of the applicant. There are numerous factors which the committee considers. Scores are only a mere part of them. The reality is, like it or not, that academic reputation of one's home institution (or lack thereof) may carry more weight than applicants would like to believe. Certainly individuals can rise up, show their stuff, but at the more elite programs, such as Emory's Internal Medicine program among others, academic reputation (or lack thereof) may be a significant factor that program directors subconsciously consider...just don't expect them to ever list it on their "top-10-things-in-an-ideal-applicant" questionnaire.

I think you are absolutely correct, that academic reputation does factor in. However, the USMLE does put everyone on the same playing field, at least in terms of that particular test. For example if you score in the top ten percent of test takers, then you are in the top ten percent. That includes medical students from Hopkins, UCSF or anywhere else even if you come from an institution that is not considered a "top" medical school or you are a D.O. This means alot since the USMLE is designed to be a standardized way to test knowledge base amongst all medical schools. I think if you were to rock step 1, Emory would at least take a look and so wouldn't many other programs.
