I have finished interviewing and my top 3 PM&R programs in no particular order are Emory, Stanford and UCLA. Does anyone have any thoughts on these three programs and how they stack up against one another. Any input would be helpful!

I'm having the same problem as you--trying to differentiate between my top choices. But I think the main thing is to go with your gut. I've also been asking people of their opinions on particular programs, but in the end it's me who's going to end up at the program. I think most programs will do a good job at training you as a physiatrist, so the key is going to a program that won't limit you. While UCLA may be stronger for outpatient than Stanford, and visa-versa for inpatient, I think both programs will still do a good job at preparing you for either. (I'm not commenting on Emory because I didn't apply or interview there).

I've been trying to make separate "rank lists" based on how much I liked a program's curriculum, residents, faculty, program director, geographical location, etc. And that did show me I was raking one program highly only because it had a big name. But otherwise I didn't find it all that helpful in differentiating the other programs, as I found myself saying of each program "but it just felt right." And how does one really quantify that?

I think in the end, you gotta write yourself a list of the pros and cons of each program, and then just throw that list out the window and go with your heart.

What area of PM&R see you interested in? I have corresponded with Dr. Frederickson at Stanford and Mautner at Emory who both do sports. So if you are interested in those probably good experience. I know nothing about UCLA except that everyone says that's the program to attend if you want to live in LA

MedBronc...are you a student or a resident? What specifically have you corresponded with Fredricson and Mautner about? I am interested in sports and it seems like Stanford has more going for them. However, Emory also has a sports fellowship and they are in a more desirable location for me.

Sorry. I am new to SDN and I see now that you are a resident. Just ignore that question.

Resident. I have talked to dr. Mautner at AAPMR in Atlanta and at AIUM conference. That is a sweet gig down there in Atlanta. Def best sports and MSK us program in south. Plus you have opportunities to cover Georgia tech athletics and even falcons games.

Dr. F at Stanford has emailed me a few times regarding articles and research he has contributed to. Never met but he is probably one of the biggest names in pmr MSK and sports on west coast and nation in general
