I hate to ask this, but I can't decide which to rank as my #1. I want really good clinical training and to come out of residency very strong and competent in psychopharm as well as psychotherapy. Basically, I want to be a really good psychiatrist for my future patients. UPMC has the whole WPIC thing going for it. But I'm from the SE and Emory would be close to my family. Gahh..would I get the same level of training at Emory as UPMC?
any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

I interviewed at both programs. I don't think you can go wrong with either, but I'll be ranking Emory higher. Emory strikes me as the more balanced program. Some of the residents I met at WPIC told me firsthand that they don't think that the psychotherapy training is as stellar as at many peer institutions, and that seems to be the prevailing impression on the interview trail. OTOH, I like Pittsburgh the city much more than Atlanta.

IMHO, the RRC requirements for residencies are now sufficient that there is more difference between candidates than between any two good - very good residencies. I truly believe that your aptitude, interest, drive, and level of concern about the patients welfare are all more important than minor differences between programs. In addition, how happy you are with your life, city, weather, family may end up making a huge difference in your level of interest and commitment to your training.

Is Nemeroff still at Emory and Chair?

Met him at a conference he ran for residents once a year and have seen him talk several times since. He appeared to be very invested in producing excellent psychiatrists.

I heard he ran into some trouble. If he is still there, go there over UPMC if you can. All the residents I met there loved it.

I have several friends at both programs, and if those are the choices you've come down to, congratulations, you're probably going to be pretty happy.

The quality of the training at both is high, and should probably be the least of your worries. Unless you have a specific research need that would be better served by one institution over the other, you probably just need to let your gut do the talking.

Thanks for the inputs. I guess it really will come down to where I decide I will be happiest. Moving somewhere new and to a new system could be good. But being near family also has bonuses, although I've been in ATL all my life and feel ready for a change.

res ips

Curtains for Nemeroff. For Charles Nemeroff, it was never a question of whether it would all come crashing down, but when it would happen. That time is now.

I can abide your barrage of anti-psychiatry tin-foilism, but I CANNOT abide people who are careless with their Latin. Pathetic.

res ipsa loquitur. Happy now.

Lawyers often shorten the doctrine to "res ips," of course they are heathens.
