Hi everyone! Very lucky to be in this position. Would love all the feedback/insight y'all have. Still waiting to hear back from UChicago which I would also consider to be in my top 3 if I am admitted. All these schools have 1.5 years of pre-clerkship that is P/F.

I'm a bit older (25F) and did a career-changer post-bacc, so I have very little experience with science research. I'm hoping to go into addiction medicine, but I could also see myself as a general internist, psychiatrist, or EM doc. Nothing crazy competitive 😅. Just hoping to work in a safety net hospital or FQHC one day. I'm interested in how to best deliver integrated care to patients who are homeless and/or moving around a lot.

Emory
Pros
  • Current students seemed really down to earth / not gunner-ish; lots of other non-trads
  • Public health research is strong and established
  • Atlanta is the gay capital of the South 🏳️‍🌈
  • Warmer weather (I'm a Texan,,, I will survive the cold but don't enjoy it)
  • Student body is very health-equity focused
Cons
  • In-house exams 🙁 so worried about step 1 preparedness
  • Not guaranteed to complete core rotations at Grady
  • Required rotations in Derm, Optho, Anesthesia = less time for community engaged projects / research
  • Georgia's 6-week abortion ban tbh. Worried about getting comprehensive OB training

Wash U
Pros
  • Reputation for really strong clinical training
  • New school of public health = new funding/faculty/projects to get involved with / help start
  • All inpatient at Barnes-Jewish, the de facto safety net hospital of the region
  • Potential for MD/MSW dual
  • Near to my extended family
Cons
  • Health-equity is not all students' strong-suit or background
  • Cold
  • LGBTQ+ life is smaller in STL

Summary: I think I am more similar to the Emory student body and Emory's ethos, but WashU is growing in its street medicine program / harm reduction efforts and I think I could get involved with new initiatives if I went there. I'm all ears!

Doesnt Missouri also have strict abortion regulations?

Both programs are incredible -- you cant really make a wrong choice here. Have you heard about financial aid options yet?

Nope they legalized it this year.

Hi there! Also choosing between Emory and some other schools. I went to WashU for undergrad and can speak about my experience living there for 5 years. As a queer Floridian I managed to get by just fine but I think you're right in that the LGBT+ scene is on the smaller (but also pretty tight-knit) side. If this is something important to you I can DM with further details about the community and happenings. It's also cold Dec-Feb but honestly not too bad so please don't let that impact your decision too much unless you tend to be hit by seasonal depression!

Both are amazinggg schools so whatever you do I don’t think there’s a wrong choice!

Great choices, both are fully P/F and have amazing opportunities.

Visit both schools and go wherever you think you will have the best quality of life if cost isn't an issue.

both great options so congrats! I would also look at the finances. But, I would say in terms of name and for your career washu would carry more weight and it is ranked higher basically in every ranking (it is a T10). Barnes-Jewish is also one of the best hospitals in the country. However, Atlanta in my opinion is definitely a better city than Saint Luis (with all due respect) and possibly more LGBTQ+ friendly. My personal pick would be Washu but the better 4-year life experience would be at Emory. If you are set on a non competitive specialty Emory fs gets the job done.

Update: Emory gave me little $$ and WashU covered COA so I think I'm headed to STL! thank y'all for the input <3 Hoping to wind up in Atlanta for residency haha
