I currently work at two different hospitals albeit not in a clinical area (registration) but I still get a lot of patient contact. But since I actually do this for money does it count as an EC? Will this and shadowing doctors suffice for application in the future (just starting my pre-med). I have two kids at home and my husband is just finishing up his degree. In order to not pay for daycare (too expensive) I work around his school schedule so it gets crazy with little to no free time... I'm hoping employment counts because its a lot of hours. Any advice?

Thanks, there are plenty of hours in there every week I work between 30-60 hours and have been working for almost 2 years at these hospitals. What kind of volunteering should I do that's not at a hospital?

I was actually just reading another thread concerning that exact question, here's a link:

Since you already have large time commitments at work, pick something you could maybe do over a weekend here and a weekend there. And like they say there, make sure you are passionate about it and really learn from it.

Def 100% counts as an ec and pt contact, althouht its not really clinical experience per se, IMO. Despite working you still must volunteer, ec does not equal volunteering. They want three things outside of numbers: volunteering, clinical experience, and research. If you lack one of these or have a weak GPA or Mcat, all of the rest of your app must be exceptional. Being a nontrad can be seen as a weakness by some schools so that may also hold you back.

This is how i approached things and I have had a pretty successful application cycle, although not as great as I had hoped due to my boarder line Mcat (30) and nontrad status (i was seen as very take it or leave it I think). This is all my opinion tho 🙂 good luck!
