I understand this question is a bit niche. I'm considering working as a PCP in concierge. Increasingly more hospitals are transferring to EPIC, and I've heard that it is very expensive. I'd obviously want to be able to see records from hospitals in an effective manner. Will I need to fork out an arm and a leg for EPIC? How much would it cost? What is the alternative?

I don't know of any small practices who use Epic. As you said, it is a huge expense and far more complex than one would ever need in such a setting. Most concierge practices, at least around here, use either niche products for that type of practice or one of the smaller EMRs. As far as connectivity, it is still in the early stages of data sharing, so it is certainly a challenge. Depending on your location, there may only be one or two major health systems/EHRs, so gaining access to and logging on to them may not be all that challenging. If you are in a state or location with a good health information exchange or community health record, you may be able to access that to see most of the patient's information.

if you get prilvedges to the local hospital you should be able to get remote access to the EMR. Although the cross connectivity would be not existent for the pp emr and the hospital EMR its still better than nothing.

This. Get a simple EMR that you can blast through quickly. Just get remote access. EPIC is overloaded, overproduced, bloated garbage.
