Screw EMRs and their associated costs and headaches. While I am all electronic, my EMR is self made and cheap as hell, and more useable than any other EMR I've used. Anyway, I came across this on sermo and thought I'd repost:

The little nanny staters at CMS are running out of money and are trying to get the EMR implemented ASAP so your practice patterns can be monitored. The money that they pay out for meeting the so called meaningful use guidelines will be recaptured in spades, once all providers are tied into the Borg.
Once assimilated, it will be illegal to practice outside of an EMR...all tests, drugs, etc will have to be ordered using an EMR. From there, CMS will force you to use their "Best Practice" recommendations, so patients will not be able to receive certain things--MR. CT, brand name drugs, etc. even if you think it is necessary. They will be called recommendations, but in fact these will be requirements.
That will be enforced by the hospital you are employed by and the fact the EMR will keep records of your practice pattern, so if you deviate from their population based societal cost effective practice requirements, you will be counseled and then terminated for too many transgressions, otherwise known as 'waste, abuse and fraud.

I remember at the beginning of the Obama administration, when Obama had his new graduate student staff break out into "workgroups" to come up with what they thought should be "meaningful use criteria". This hardly feels like a free country any more.

The funny thing , to me, is doctors are lining up to get the little scraps of money from "meaningful use" when I truly believe it is data collection for the purpose of screwing us all.
