Hello,
I live in a southwest suburb of Chicago, and I've been wondering what I could do with my gap year. I've been volunteering at an Emergency Room by my house and come to the conclusion that becoming an ER technician maybe both fun and beneficial for my journey to medical school. However, one of the requirements for becoming an emergency room technician is to have an EMT-B licence. I've been googleing to try and find a consolidated course in my are but so far have come up empty. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a program in my area?
Thanks for any advice you maybe able to provide,
Mason

I don't know specifically about your area but I live in nj and when I looked to be certified I went to my local EMS squad and they pointed me in the right direction and even signed me up for the course and paid for it when I told them I would be willing to ride with them upon completion of the course. That would be the easiest way to go about it.

Good luck 🙂

I did mine at a local community college. Some fire stations and places that offer workplace training/CPR/AED training stuff will offer EMT-B courses. I would honestly just call up to your local fire station and/or local ambulance transport company and ask them. They will point you in the right direction.

Do you guys know if it's easy to find a job as an EMT or will it take a lot of searching to get a position?

Depends on what type of work you want to go into. An ER tech job isn't the easiest thing to obtain. They usually want people with experience since you will be dealing with various types of patients and emergent care situations. If there are multiple competitive ambulance companies in your area its usually pretty easy to get a job at those because historically the turn over at those places is pretty high (especially in larger cities). It helps to know someone (I went through my instructor for my private ambulance gig). I am not sure if hospital based EMS hires basics or not. Most of the folks I know in hospital based EMS are paramedics. Other than that, just get your resume out there.
