Is anyone here working as an EMT or ER Tech during the school year or summer? If so, I'd just like to know what kind of training you had and how/where you got hired. Thanks

I did my EMT training when I was in high school, and got my paramedic during my UG. I now work in a hospital as a paramedic. I would be happy to answer any questions you might have.

What was the first job you got with your training and how old were you? I feel like an 18 yr old wouldn't really get hired that young.

Most young EMTs don't get "hired" unless they want to start a career as an EMT. Most EMTs work for volunteer first aid or fire companies. It's more about the experience than getting paid for it. EMT training is fully funded by many states though, so that's free.

I started as a volunteer firefighter/EMT, then went part time for the FD at 19 while going to college and eventually a FF/Medic. Once I graduated, after being injured in a house fire, I switched to working flight and critical care ground for a few years before I decided to go to medical school and started my position with the hospital 2 1/2 years ago. EMT training is not expensive, my paramedic school was $5,000. You can get hired as an 18 y/o EMT, but its difficult as you are not insurable. Most guys volunteer with it at first or go fire.

I volunteer as an EMT at my campus agency and work in a hospital during the school year. EMT is a specific certification, and it's done on more of a national basis, so that the certification can usually cross state lines. Google "EMT class" in your area and you should find options. They range anywhere from $600-$1200, with$800-$900 being about average in my experience.
