Would taking General Microbiology and an EMT course over the summer be too difficult? I talked to someone who has taken both of these before separately and he says it would be too difficult.

General Microbiology is 5 credits at my school and it is a 12 week course over the summer.

EMT course is 11 credits but it's not really a science course, so it is probably easier than General Microbiology. The EMT course is $1,500+ though so I want to be sure I can handle it AND do well before even trying.

I'm also going on an 8 day study abroad trip to Spain this summer, which will also include a 3 credit humanities class that should be a complete breeze, and the professor is probably going to be super lenient due to whatever classes I end up taking aside from that. I've been on 2 other study abroad trips before and the included classes were usually a complete joke, easy A's.

Thoughts? I'm for sure taking Microbio and the study abroad, so I just need to know if I can take EMT on top of that. Hopefully people who have done Microbio over the summer or know how rigorous the EMT course is will let me know.

Way too much work for the summer. The summer is supposed to be about rest and relaxation!

If you really want to do something, I would pick two of the above and do them. Not all three.

Well, the study abroad class will be a breeze. The only issue with that class is missing 8ish days of the other two courses if I did take the other two.

Is it feasible to do both? I calculated my time and I don't have time to do EMT in the future unless my plans get knocked off somehow.

I don't care about not having a super enjoyable summer, I'm more concerned about finishing my degree and doing well for now. Plus, EMT program sounds interesting.

EMT PROGRAM IS 3 DAYS A WEEK, 4 HOURS A DAY.

MICROBIOLOGY IS 2 DAYS A WEEK, COUPLE HOURS A DAY.

Just have to figure out how much time I'd need to spend outside of class and make sure there is enough time to manage both and do well.

I think it will also depend on how hard General Microbiology at your school is. Have you heard if the professor is really grueling? Honestly though, micro is a bunch of memorization and I think it's definitely doable if you study during your spare time. This is similar to people taking 2 summer courses or studying for MCAT over the summer while doing research. I feel that it is definitely manageable.

Does your EMT program also required you to do 12 hour ride along shifts? If so, yeah too much.

I did my EMT (and my paramedic which is more time intensive) while working M-F 8-5. I don't see why it would be hard in the least to do. You take more than 16 credits normally don't you?

The bigger question is why are you taking the EMT course? Since you said that you will never have the time to take the course again I am assuming you will be applying to med school during college. You will likely do your 6 (or fewer...) rideouts and never get on an ambulance again. Your time would be much better spent volunteering, studying for the MCAT, or something else that would make your application stronger. Now if you want to actually be an EMT then go ahead. I worked as a paramedic and value that experience.

I was taking a full class load as a microbiology grad student, and working in the lab full time, and I had time to get it done.

YMMV
