i dont believe you will be able to get the training for free. I did it in ny and it cost around $500. if you want to volunteer your time you could check out the Central Park Medical Unit.

HI..I think you can only take the EMT course for free if you end up getting paid as one (then the corps can reimburse you). I took the EMT course at Columbia. If you are a CU student, then you can volunteer at CAVA (Columbia Area Volunteer Ambulance), otherwise, there is CPMU (central Park Medical Unit), which, well, operates in and around the park. The people there are really great and they provide alot of extra hands on training. You can contact them via their website http://www.cpmu.com/

Hi. I am an EMT in NYC. CPMU is not the best about getting back to you about volunteering or about the classes so I do not know if you want to wait around for them.

I took a class with Emergency Care Programs in Brooklyn. Their web site is 333care.com. The Cost was about $750. They have classes at night/weekends so it can fit into your schedule. It was a great experience. They will also place you with an ambulance company for a job if you want. For volunteering, I do it through school (City College) but there are a number of volunteer outfits including Jamaica Estates, Whitestone in Queens. It depends where you live.

There is supposedly a free class offered in the Bronx- maybe Columbia can tell you about it.

Are you looking for a volunteer squad that provides certification training to its volunteers? College Point Community Ambulance might be a start.

Volunteer Recruitment Overview:
The College Point Community Ambulance Corps is an all volunteer emergency ambulance service that serves the College Point, Queens, NY area. The Corps is looking for community minded individuals to volunteer as Dispatchers, Drivers and Attendants. Members who volunteer as attendants have the opportunity to become certified (training provided) as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) which will enable them to work in the EMS field in the public/private sector. A great opportunity for a young person starting out or a career change to the health field. Ideal for students studying medicine or for those needing community service credit.
