IN the First Aid for step 2 CK Peds section. It says that you need to prophylax unrepaired VSD and ASD before dental procedures.

IN Kaplan Master the Boards Step 3 by Conrad Fisher he says on page 24
that

"the only cardiac defects that need prophylasix are
prosthetic valves
UNrepaired CYANOTIC heart disease
Previous endocarditis
Transplant recipients who develop valve disease"

Since ASD's and VSD's are not cyanotic is it right that they don't need prophylaxis?

according to the 2007 revised guidelines, they recommend prophylaxis for anyone with:

-History of endocarditis
-heart transplant
-prosthetic valves
-Congenital Heart Disease if:
-if unrepaired and cyanotic
-defect completely repaired with prosthetic material
-repaired with residual defect adjacent to prosthetic patch or device

Just to follow up,

I checked with a cardiology fellow, who confirmed that VSD's and ASd;s indeed do not require prophylaxis
