So I'm thinking of proposing to my gf sometime before rotations.. but how on earth did those of you who are engaged and in MS now pay for the ring on a med stud budget? Are there loans one can take out for a ring? Or saved summer money or something??

I got lucky and had my grandmothers diamond...I just got a kickin setting for it. You can take out the loan money or you can finance it. Remember you can get a nice ring but not break the bank....you can always get another later in life after your mercedes when you graduate residency.

My fiance supports me. I used my loans to buy the ring.

Jewelry stores offer attractive financing, but while I don't recomend marriage or engagement untill after graduation when your stock rises, I have the following insight.
I worked as at a ritzy jewelry store in college and most stores of these types have cz stones in all their settings and then sell the diamond additionally. Take the old lady out and look at settings and then supprise her with her choice and never discuss the economics. Also never discuss the stone, chances are she'll just love it, after all, cz are much more spectacular than the real thing.
Then if you still love her when you get your first big check "upgrade" her diamond with or without her knowlege. She'll never know what the first stone was and if she's the type that would have it appraised 😱
RUN MAN RUN.

a girl in my med school class once said 1 carrot for every ten years😉
I also heard that either 10% salary or one months salary for the ring, so if you do it now and you are taking out loans like me (3rd year and owe 150,000 or so) then that means she should pay $15,000 for her own ring.

I am assuming of course that -$15,000 defers to her paying🙂
