It seems that most schools specifically require "6 semester hours" of writing/English composition.

I just realized, one semester away from graduating I might add, that I only have 5.336 semester hours that would directly satisfy this requirement. Ugh. I started at a community college and tested out of both English 101 and 102, only taking two quarters of writing.

My question is that I have multiple upper level neuroscience and biology courses that I have taken which are "writing in the major courses" that demand a significant amount of writing. Would these courses count towards my English/writing requirement? Do I need to contact each school that I am considering applying to and ask this question? Should I just bite the bullet and take an English course at my local community college after graduating?

Any input would be helpful!

You are probably ok, but:
1) how do you have 5.336 credits of something? doesn't make sense
2) check with each medical school....if you consider it a burden to do so, then reconsider wanting to attend there
3) it wouldn't hurt to take another writing class if you need to. its an essential skill and form of communication

Take two composition courses next semester

I applied this cycle with only 3 ENG credits (1 class) but many "writing intensive" credits in classes ranging from business law to economics. Most schools are fine with the substitution, its usually on their website, otherwise call to confirm. I remember some schools really would not consider me, but most do. For example Columbia would not consider writing intensive courses. I think Temple wouldn't either.

Didnt seem to really hurt my app, 5 II's and 1 A so far.

It's because I have 8 quarter credits... Which translates to 5.336 semester credits.

A lot of schools will allow philosophy or even writing-heavy science courses to substitute

Like others have said you will likely be fine. Worst case is the school that accepts you will ask you to take a class before matriculation.
