I have placed out of 3 hrs of English w. AP. They said they do not accept that, but they will accept writing courses instead. However, I have taken 3 hrs of english at a CC, but no further english courses. I have taken a course with a writing component at U Texas though. Would this count? It says "W" next to the course on my transcript and it was an english class, just not designated as one.

If it counts then I have 6 hours I have taken (w/ out the AP)

If not, then I have 3 hours and I need to take another.

I have an interview with them on 8/24... do you think I would even have one, had I not met their requirements?

Would this class seem to sufficiently meet their requirements?

Thanks for the help!

Yeah I know they are pretty strict on their requirements but I also know they're pretty loose on what they'll consider at writing requirements. My college advisor told us they took writing intesive classes like philosophy, religious studies, etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong anyone.

I had the exact same problem. The 'W' is a no go. I had to rearrange my fall schedule to take a lit course instead of a psych elective. Other schools have similar policies, so I just had to suck it up, but I was really angry!

are you sure about that? at my school a 'w' bio course fulfills upper division writing requirement. it would seem odd that other schools don't accept this course for english requirement, just because it doesn't have 'english' or 'writing' in the title. heck, one of my stats course was called 'soc sci 55'.

I am going to call tomorrow to find out for certain. Rest assured yal will know... at least for Vanderbilt.

Where is this "W" you all speak of on the AMCAS?

It's not a designation on the AMCAS, but rather on certain schools' transcripts, indicating a "writing component" class.

Ahhh.. thanks. 😀

best bet is to call. Dawn (admissions office) is very helpful.

OK, so I called a little bit ago...

I spoke with Pat and she said that if this was the "writing" class I was going to substitute, just to e-mail her and she would put it into my file.

FYI, the name of the class on my transcript is "F S 301 - AMERICAN HUMOR - W'" and I took at The University of Texas at Austin
