I went to school on a quarter system, so when they say 1 year of English required, do they mean 3 quarters?

For the school that accept AP Credit, is 8 units the equivalent of 2 quarters?

Do medical schools only look at courses that are designated as ENGL on the AMCAS application as fulfilling the english requirement? I took a writing intensive course in the linguistics department but designated it under FLAN (foreign language, linguistics and literature). Should I change it to ENGL to have it count toward the English req?

Thank you!

1. 1 year = 3 quarters
2. Assuming english is 4 credits per quarter, 8 credits = 2 quarters. If english is 3 credits per quarter, 8 credits = 2.67 quarters (or essentially a year). It's most likely the former though.
3. I believe the writing-intensive course does constitute an english course.

I go to a quarter school and I can confirm what Agent B says is true. 👍

How does that work? I have never heard of a quarter school😕

It's 1/4th a regular school. 1/4th the work, 1/4th the material to cover, but also 1/4th the happiness. 😉

A quarter school, like the UCs (except Berkeley I think), splits the whole entire year into 4-three month blocks. The typical academic year for a student would start at Fall quarter (Late Sept-Mid Dec) followed by a 3-4 week winter break. Next would be Winter quarter (Jan-March) followed by a 1 week Spring break. Lastly, you have Spring quarter (Late March - Mid June). The last "quarter" is Summer quarter which a lot of people opt out of. I went to a school that uses the quarter system and I absolutely LOVED it. It went at a little bit of a faster pace because you are learning all this material in an 11 week time frame, but it means that if you truly hate a class it will be over quickly! I also prefer the quarter system over the semester system because you end up taking more classes, which means you can add variety to your schedule. Another bonus is that when you go on spring break, you can have fun without feeling like you are in school. You just finished Finals so it is time to party! Lastly, your summer is from mid June to late September, meaning your summer actually starts in the summer.. not in Spring 🙂 I remember when I was in undergrad this was huge because the best beach days were in September and some of my friends would be in school while I'd be chilling in the warm sun. This can also be a downside to the quarter system though. If the majority of your friends are on the semester system they have their break all at the same time and you have some of your breaks alone! Luckily a lot of my friends were also on the quarter system so this wasn't really an issue for me.. hence why I love the quarter system so much.

Thank you for your answers.

So should I change that writing-intensive course's designation from FLAN to ENGL on my AMCAS primary application, or do schools ask for that on the secondaries?

My suggestion is to change it in the primary, though others can modify this advice.

Oh we know. Mr Avante was just making fun of my weird phrasing.
