I had a question about the English requirement for medical school.

I took an Advanced Placement (AP) test during my senior year in High School
(Rhetoric and Composition) and received a grade of "CR" (credit) from UT
Austin. I then proceeded to take "American Literature" at Brookhaven
Community College in Dallas.

Does this satisfy the English requirement for medical schools?

Anybody else in the same boat or know anything about this?

Thanks!

I'm in the boat with ya! Unfortunately I think you need to take another English class to satisfy the requirements at many schools. Not ALL, but a lot.

Oh no!

Anybody applying to TMDSAS (Texas Medical and Dental School Application Service) and know anything on this?

I think you'd be fine, but email them to ask. I got the same AP credit from high school, then took a writing class, then a short story/literature class and that seemed to work. As long as the lit class was from the English dept at the school, I don't see why it wouldn't qualify.

P.S. The short story class was not from the institution from which I graduated.

Good question y'all. I was mechanical engineering so we had no "English" requirements-just writing intensive requirements. I had 3 of those courses, but 2 are a senior design project and the other is technical communication. Do you think I need 0,1, or 2 english classes to apply to schools that require a year. My first assumption is just one. Mahalo.

Good to hear from another Texan!

So your AP credit worked out ok for Rhetoric/Composition? My concerns were that it was AP credit, and that I only got a "CR" (credit) and not a grade.

And the American Literature class I took was in the English department, albeit at a community college in Dallas =/

I'm pretty sure that the requirement is satisfied by 1 yr of AP English. As long as the credits (6-8 units) are shown on your undergraduate transcript. I know a lot of med schools do not accept AP credits for the core sciences, (or at least they require you to follow it with a more advanced course in the same subject) but most of them waive that requirement for English.

Sweet! That was what I was thinking too. All of my sciences courses and Calculus were taken at the University, but I felt (or hoped) that the med schools would be more lenient on the English AP credit and english class at the community college.

And yes, my AP Credit is shown as a separate class, as 3 hours of credit, on my UT Austin transcript. whew.

Anybody else? (I emailed AMCAS this evening, but I am anxious for responses from students who are familiar with this situation!)

I assume you got credit for RHE 306 for the AP test. I further assume that you got transfer credit for E 316K with your community college class. Looks like you're set.

Yep! My AP credit transfered as "E 306 - Rhoetoric and Composition"--so this is ok, even though it is a grade of "CR" and not a letter grade?

And yup, my english class taken at brookhaven community college transferred as "E 316K".

So these are both ok for TMDSAS?

Thanks!

Just an FYI to others, TMDSAS emailed me back and said my AP credit was ok, as was my american lit class from the community college (since it was offered in the english department)--so I have satisfied my 6 hours of English requirements for TMDSAS.

AMCAS has not responded yet.

Hey TX Guy,

This is good news. I'm glad you asked the question. Looking at the MSAR it seemed like quite a few schools don't take AP for the English requirement but I'm glad the Texas ones do. 🙂

So is that a generalizable rule, that schools say no AP, but if it's AP credit that a college granted credit for a specific class for that they'll take that (despite the lack of a grade?)
