I am surprised that 24 hours have passed since I learned of the tradgedy and have yet to see a post concerning the 9.0 earthquake and subsequent Tsunamis in South Asia. The death toll is now over 13,000 and tsunamis have reached as far as Somalia. It is absolutely staggering to imagine. People who weren't crushed by crumbling buildings etc were washed out to sea. I just can't even begin to comprehend what these poor people are going through. My heartache prayers go out to all those affected.

🙁 🙁 🙁 to this tragic story.

Prayers and warm wishes for everyone suffering through this trying ordeal.

Hopefully our government can assist these populations in need 🙁 🙁 🙁

I wish I were a doctor and could go there to help.

Agreed -- although I am certain they will need more than doctors to help. I know when the Hurricaines wholloped Florida again and again they were calling for people just to go help clean up or provide non-perishable food items. Oh and I just heard on the news that the death toll is now over 14,000 and still rising.

I know... I'm completely shaken up by it... It's horrible! I want to be able to do something, anything... My heart is torn!

2,700 people die each day due to heart disease.

Why must you see a post regarding the death of 13,000 people? If I die the last thing I'd want is a stupid-ass SDN post regarding my death.

What might have the health care industry done to prevent the deaths of those 13,000 people?

i think the op feels this is something that isnt on our minds; it's been on my mind all day but SDN isnt the first place i think to come and post;

anyway, I also want to point out that alot of people die of heart disease but alot of that could be prevented by exercise, eating habits etc...(not for everyone, but for many). id also like to say that more people have died on the road than have by terrorism and yet (i dont have exact numbers, sorry) a vast amount of our resources go into fighting terror abroad and at home. The victims of death on the road are often just as innocent but what politician would be allowed to say lets divert funds from figihting terror (oh, like in iraq) to improve road safety b.c the people that drape themselves in the flag wont stand for sissy stuff like that. There is an inherent racist element to the fight on terror, and i think one would be hard pressed to argue against that.

If I'm sick the last thing I want is a guy like you for my doctor. This is one of the more meaningful posts on this message board. Instead of being self-centered, it's concerned with something doctors are supposed to be concerned about...other people. I don't understand your frustration with her concern, and you're being a dick to bring negativity to such an empathic post. Take a nap.

My prayers also go out to all those in these terrible natural disasters.

I just realized that indo is a guy. For the past couple of months, I though he was a SHE b/c of Nicole Kidman avatar. This stinks, what a let down.

I think HE was just making a point, which is that the tsunami was a natural disaster, while the loss of life associated with heart disease can be significantly reduced and in many cases can be preventable. We have the opportunity here to make a significant difference.

Having said that, I think the healthcare industry has done plenty and will continue to educate, inform and treat. Let's not forget that the individual has to want to be responsible for his/her health as well.

You couldn't afford my services so you'd have to take it to the free clinic.

Being surprised and sounding somewhat upset with SDN people that a post on a natural dissaster hasn't been created in Pre-allo is stupid.

Haha. Sorry 'bout the let down.

I wrote that reply because the OP sounded as if we all should be ashamed because we hadn't created a thread in pre-allo about the earthquake.

On a side note, a famous heart surgeon died of suicide. At least heart disease, heart surgery, and suicide are remotely on topic in pre-allo.

It's really sad 🙁. We talked about it a little in sdn chat last night. These tsunamis are gigantic and travel so fast. If you happen to see one you don't have a chance to get away. One thing I'm wondering is why more people didn't leave the coasts, an 8.5 earthquake in the ocean is a huge deal.

there are now estimated over 22000 people dead. further, it is estimated this may reach to over 50000 since this starting number after just 24 hours is so high.

the most powerful earthquake on record was the 9.5 quake in chile/south america that also killed 60 people in HI, usa. that was about 4-5 times more powerful than this quake.

also note, that the about 5-6 or so 9+ earthquakes on known record have all occured in the last 40-50 years. interesting for all of us christians. a possible sign of "birth pangs"

this 8.9 earthquake has been upgraded to 9.0.

Ya I am really worried about this because I have a friend in my neuro class. Although we were not friends outside of school, we would meet before class every day and talk for like an hour. I really liked this girl....Well she had to take a makeup for our neuro final (so she took it a few days early) because she had to attend her brothers wedding...In Sri Lanka!! I am really worried, I hope she returned home. I have no idea how long she was staying but I do know she told me it is a really long trip to get there so I am assuming she stayed for at least a week. I also heard last night that a few Americans had been killed. I can only hope she is ok🙁

Do you know what part of Sri Lanka she was in? This is absolutely horrible. While the death toll is astonishing there are also many more who have lost their homes.

Medikit, apparently, there were no warnings offered, so fishermen were still in the sea. I wonder if the weather forecast people could see the Tsunamis coming? Warnings could have saved a lot of lives.

Hey there
no I am not sure what part. I could possibly email my professor I think he would know how long she was staying because she had to take the final a few days early because she was leaving. I know he had given her a hard time about getting an early test, and together we would complain about it like every day. She had to bring him an invitation (for "evidence" I guess) to allow her to take the final early so she could go. Now I wish almost he wouldnt have given her a makeup (that might sound weird) but that she had to stay here to take the exam on schedule (at least I would know she was safe). And it sucks because we would talk a lot in school, do our studying, etc but never exchanged phone numbers for some reason. I can't even call her to see if she is ok (and it is weird bc the last day I saw her I gave her a holiday card and was going to tell her to give me her number and call me when she got back, but I was so stressed with other things that I forgot)....
I hope the deaths can stop increasing and that they all get the help they need.

agreed, the OP made a heartfelt compassionate post and she should be commended for her concern rather than ridiculed. I too feel for the victims. i actually have a friend in Thailand and am trying desperately to get in touch with her. My prayers are for her, her family and for the people of all the countries affected by this tragedy.

I said I was surprised. Nothing more. Nothing less. I will take your suggestion, though, and refrain from mourning your passing when it comes.

Yes -- many people do die of diseases everyday but many of them are behavior related. These people had no warning -- no medical test, no surgeon generals report, no high tech machinery to let them know what was headed their way. They were simply going about their daily routines -some worshiping, some sleeping, some shopping- and then BAM they were surrounded by the stuff of science fiction movies. Tens of thousands dead and millions homeless. As if that's not bad enough can you imagine the public health mess that is bound to unfold? Think of the disease that will spread with all of these carcases laying around -- dead humans, dead fish, dead pets, dead livestock-- the ocean keeps bringing them in. I can barely begin to get my head around the physical and emotional devastation. To top it off, geophysicists re now saying htat the entire planet is trembling and that the Earth's rotation has been disturbed. It seems so apocalyptic.

Like Scubadoc said, this didn't go ignored on SDN, as there is threads about this in the lounge, but what a terrible tragedy. Our desire to help those in such a time of suffering and inexplicable horror only confirms that this field we have all chosen to pursue is exactly where we need to be. My love and support goes out to those with missing relatives, friends, and other loved ones.

Don't allow yourself to be baited by the red-herring, MedicineBird.

A friend of mine IMed me a few days ago, saying he was in Thailand visiting his parents. Then his little brother became ill and they had to take him to the hospital, but my friend never told me if they were still in Thailand or back here in the US. I still haven't heard from him. 🙁

with all due respect to the victims, i don't buy this at all. guess what, if you live on an island or other extended shoreline, water can be dangerous! tsunamis, hurricanes, etc. happen on a regular basis all around the world. its the same with the people who live in the part of america called 'tornado alley' who get caught in tornados. it happens. maybe they didn't have scientists forecasting the disaster on digital satellite tv. that's just the way it is.

To the previous poster...if you can sense a 9.0 earthquake please tell the top scientists in the world cuz they're still having a hard time...

My Parents are actually traveling in Thailand/Laos/Vietnam right now =( I hope they're away from the coastline...

Prayers go out to the families that lost and the recovery programs going on...

i never said i could. and i never said that scientists could either. i really don't know what your point was.

anyway, i hope your folks are OK.

I lived on an Alaskan island as a kid and well remember the tsunami sirens (thanks to a warning system) in the middle of the night and packing up and fleeing to higher ground. They don't have a Tsunami warning system in that region because Tsunamis in the Indian Ocean are unheard of. Scientists in Hawaii saw the potential for disaster when they detected the quake 2 hours before the waves hit but couldn't reach anyone to warn them. How can you be so arrogant?

i'm a little surprised at that remark. there's no need for mud-slinging and insults. i'm not at all arrogant. i'm just pragmatic and realistic. i don't need to start a thread in disbelief about why no one in pre-allo is mourning this tradgedy to prove that i'm compassionate. those topics are well-covered in the "Everyone" forum.

i think you must have misunderstood the tone of my post. 😕 sorry if it was so offensive.

i knew it when I checked yahoo this morning...searching for someone to blame it on. It's a natural disaster - continue. CO, ozone, globle warming, oppressive corporations are sure to follow. And, of course, the fact that America only gave $x.

Sorry -- I didn't mean to sling mud I was just taken aback by how flippant your post sounded. Guess that's the downside of a forum -- intonations, insinuations, and intentions are not always clear.

Although I must say I am offended that a topic about having concern and compassion for human suffering can turn into this sort of drivel. 🙁

The UN should give every citizen in 3rd world countries life vests to prevent people from dying.

exactly. also, one does not personally know the people one speaks to on an internet forum, so determining one's intent in posts (not to mention making judegments on the character of other people) is a futile pursuit.

oh well, such is life. 😉

Last time I checked Maldives, Phuket. etc. are resort areas for the wealthy and Sri Lanka does major trade with the US, UK, Germany, Japan, Singapore, India, Iran, Taiwan, Belgium, Hong Kong, China, South Korea. Does that still qualify as 3rd world?

Am I being a killjoy? Although I am typically quite the cynic I just can't muster much of it up about this.

Thought it was kinda funny myself. Jeeze -- I can't believe how touchy this whole post became. Someone earlier may have had it right -- we all need to take a nap.

Go to www.CNN.com - there are several websites listed that are collecting funds for this disaster, as well as many others around the world. Anything you can give is better than nothing at all.

not to be scientifically morbid, but how big was this tsunami? I read 20 feet high...how could it possibly cause so much damage? Was it moving at a incredibly fast rate or something? How can a 20 or even 40 foot wave be so damaging? wouldn't it just run after hitting the beach?

There were multiple land falls of Tsunamis -- some 20 feet some 40 feet (think 4 story building). It's that it hit so many places of dense population. A tsunami is incredible fast and powerful. Waves come in faster than people can run and pull people out into the ocean and drown them. The force alone of being hit by a wave of that magnitude is enough to break a body.

I read somewhere that tsunamis can be 100 ft tall sometimes :scared: .

Also, tsunamis travel as fast as 500 km/hr (310 mi/hr). That's really really fast 🙁

here we go...

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&u=/ap/20041228/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/us_quake

I heard the tsunami moved at 500 mph (don't know if it hit land at that speed). Someone else told me that if you were on a cruise liner in the middle of the ocean, you wouldn't feel it b/c the water movement occurs at the bottom of the ocean and only surfaces when it hits shore/shallow water. Sounds possible, but I don't believe it. Anyone know?
