Enough for UOP, UCSF?

Just took my DAT for the second time today... I did better this time:

First time: 19/17/21 (AA/PA/TS)
Today: 24/18/26

My gpa is 3.0 cummulative, 2.7 science

Submitted my application in July. Do you think I have a chance for UCSF or UOP this late in the game?

Congratulations on your 2nd score! It is very impressive.
Regarding to UOP, I heard that this school really emphasizes on PAT score, and its average is 20. I think your 18 PAT is really good, but you probably have to wait for a while before you hear anything from UOP as they interview people with 20 on all sections of DAT first.
Good luck! You did really well, and i am sure you will get into at least one school.

Great job on the DATs! I think you should have a decent chance of getting into UOP. My stats were 23/19, 3.2 GPA and they called me for an interview in Sept. UOP's definitely a DAT school and though your PAT is lower than their average, you rocked the AA. Someone has to make up for the guy who got a 28 PAT to keep that ~20 average. How did you do on your RC? I hear they like to see high scores in that as well.

UCSF on the otherhand may be tougher. How much research experience do you have? I don't have much lab research, though i've done a couple years of health outcomes studies, but have not heard from them yet. 😡

I have a 23/20 (aa/pat) and a 4.0 gpa and I have not received an interview from UCSF. My ADDSAS number is <100, and I returned the secondary in September. I have no idea what's going on with that school, and they refuse to give me any information on the phone. I did, however get early interviews to all of the other schools I applied to including UOP, so I guess I shouldn't be too upset.

So, to try to answer your question: I think you have a better chance at UOP, they will overlook the low GPA moreso than UCSF. Hopefully you have a lot of extras because they really seem to be looking for well-rounded people (with high DATs of course!) If or when you get an interview from UOP get very excited because they told us that once you interview with them you have a 97% chance of receiving acceptance!

Good luck, all you can do is wait - or if you live in SF stop by the school, because one of the girls in my interview group had just stopped by and they asked her if she wanted to interview that day.

RC has been a big challenge for me. I got a 16 (14 percentile) the first time on the RC. Brought it to a 21 this time. When I was interviewed by my pre-healthcare profession advisor, he said my score of 16 was "like the score of someone who didn't speak english as their first language."

As for research, I've done a lot of it. Did undergrad and worked in biotech after graduating. I know that my gpa is way less than competitive for UCSF and UOP, but I was hoping that perhaps my new dat scores might compensate for it.

I can't say anything about UOP since I didn't apply to UOP.

As for UCSF, I think you have a competitive chance if, in addition to your awesome DAT score (congrats, by the way), you have a lot of community service activities and research experience. UCSF is number 1 in NIH funding so I think they get excited if you have some publications on your application.

In any case, both UOP and UCSF are great schools. I think its harder to evaluate your chances at this time; UCSF started interviewing around mid-late October (I think they conduct 3 interview sessions/week with approx. 13 applicants per session). In any case, I envy your DAT scores. I'm not sure if I could improve 5 points on my AA or TS if I took the DAT again. Great job!!! 👍

Probably not the smartest thing to do, but I actually only applied to UCSF and UOP. It's hard to say which one is my #1 choice...haha, whichever one lets me in I suppose... But seriously, after visiting both schools and talking to students, profs, alumni, etc. I'm definitely leaning toward UOP. UOP may be a bit more expensive, but I'm more interested in running a clinical practice than doing research.

If you get the chance, I highly recommend visiting both schools to get a feel of what they're like. People at UOP are very friendly...just don't expect as nice a reception at UCSF...

Great job on your DATs. I think you have a shot at UOP since you have really high AA and Sci scores. I know they emphasize PAT, but you did really well ont he other sections. hey jess...you interviewed at ucla right? i heard that ucsf and ucla communicate with each other. communicate meaning that they'll usually give you an interview for one first and then give you the other later...which then means that you will usually get into one straight up and be waitlisted on the other. for me, i got an interview from ucsf and interviewed as an alternate for ucla. of course i know very few people (actually just one) that got straight up accepted into both. and i know a lot of people that were very qualified that were accepted to one and waitlisted at the other. but even if you're waitlisted doesn't mean you can't get in cuz there are a few people in my class (ucsf) that were on the waitlist. so don't worry, i'm sure you'll be fine.

as for the uop/ucsf debate. i find it very confusing because i thought that my average gpa (3.3 overall, 3.1 science) and high dat (25aa, 23sci, 21pat) would get me an interview at uop (since they supposedly stress high dat) and HOPEFULLY ucsf and ucla. turns out i didn't even get an interview from uop. and for the comment about high RC...i got a 25 on that....so i dunno...there must've been something in my rec letters or extra curriculars they didn't like.

but basically what i'm trying to say is that anything can happen...so just be optimistic... 🙂

Thanks for the words of encouragement... the fact that I didn't get an interview from UCSF actually came up during my UCLA interview and the faculty members were really surprised and they encouraged me to make sure that my application hadn't been misplaced or anything. It is dissapointing to hear that I may have sig. lowered my shot at ucsf by applying to both of the UC's esp since San Francisco is where my family is and I would really like to be back in that city.

Oh well, we will see what happens. My cousin and his wife, who both are recent UCSF graduates, told me that it is actually beneficial to go to the UCSF interview already having an acceptance from another school. Not exactly sure why, but maybe that will be the situation that I find myself in.

Anyways, sorry to be off-topic. I guess it all just goes to show that you cannot really predict this admissions process. 🙂

actually not necessarily if you put contradicting info. But what if you put on your application that your dream school is UCLA. If they share info, then you are screwed with UCSF becuase they will "know" your dream school is UCSF. Or if you put on both applications that they are both your dream schools. lol

you are right about all of us having different criteria. The dental schools that appeals most to us is all relative. However, UCLA and UCSF do have the most prestige and along with harvard have the highest board scores. In addition, of the schools that require a secondary, UCLA and UCSF have the highest number of applicants. Indicating that they are probably the most sought after dental schools in the country. So by popular majority (meaning being the most sought after) it is safe to conclude that those people feel these schools are the best to fit their needs.
