Hey guys I'm new to this forum and would love some advice. Anyway I graduated from College with a not so great 3.2 gpa (and my science gpa was around a 2.9 something thanks to a D+ in calc and 2 Cs my first two years one in chem I and one in physics I; I was a bit unfocused 😛) and a Biology major. I currently work as a laboratory technician as a contractor (i.e. nonexistant job security) for a large pharma company, and will be attending a 15 month clinical lab science program soon, and I'm currently taking 2 prereqs which I think I'll ace 🙂

My question is if I annihilate the program and get a 3.8-4.0 (much more focused now) would there be any chance of that I would like to be get into medical school? I was interested previously in graduate school and had a fair bit of research (fellowship one summer on Lyme Disease, poster presentation at coference for other research though admittedly not biomedical), but realized the current employment situation for scientists is HORRIBLE. Also would my clinical laboratory experience help me get into a Pathology residency?

Any advice (positive or negative) is appreciated. I also understand I have a long road ahead to becoming a doctor...

I think you can boost your academic credentials more quickly and cheaply by taking advantage of the AACOMAS grade forgiveness policy and retaking the low grades for As (assuming the same credit hours or greater). The retake need not be at the same school. The course name needn't be identical so long as the course content is demonstrably similar per the course catalogs. Only the retaken grade is included in your application GPAs.

It would be an issue to consider that Clinical Lab Science coursework, if its considered like Med Tech classes, would not be included in the BCPM by AMCAS (where you most need improvement), but they would be included in the sGPA by AACOMAS: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=552026

You might figure out what 45 hours of a 3.8 GPA would do to your cGPA and sGPA.
