Question 76 GC: since methane has more atoms and thefore a greater molecular complexity than the smaller propane, the delta (S) would be higher for methane.
Can anyone explain what's going on? Don't you think being less complexed (more disordered) increases the entropy?

I had the same thinking as the you for the longest time.. it makes sense that it appears to be ordered in our mind but in fact, in creating this order, we are setting up the ability for it to fall to pieces in a sense.

Which has a higher entropy? A full bookshelf in a library or a pile or books?

The answer is the bookshelf. Those books represent as you put, the potential for disaster or disorder. The pile of books really can't be disordered any more..

I know it doesn't make sense but once you convince yourself that this is the case, the problems become much easier.

uh did u type something wrong?
methane is CH4, propane is C3H8.
Propane has more atoms lol!

The question states if Butane has higher entropy then Propane and the answer is 'Yes' because Butane has more atoms (i.e. higher potential to have disorder) thus higher entropy then Propane.

Its like if you have more clothes in your closet than your brother/sister that means you have potentials to have more disordered closet than your sibling. (Not that you are disordered/misorganized but you have 'potential' because you have more clothes thus easily disordered as compared to your sibling) Not sure if this make sense but I thought to put this out there as well as the corrected question.
