So I had some blood work done the other day and it came back with a hugely high number of eosinophils. My doc said it was like twice the highest number of the normal range. I have allergies but they haven't been active for a month. Pretty much everything else that causes high eosinophils is really bad. I know its probably nothing but I'm kind of worried anyway. Am I overreacting or what?

Don't worry, you probably just have parasites crawling through your brain. What did your doctor think?

lol that would be great if it would get me out of my finals.
My doctor didn't say much because she called me at like 9pm. She said it could be the allergies but wants me to have it rechecked in 6 months. I don't know I just don't like the idea of anything blood related being out of wack. Like I dont have enough to worry about.

SIX MONTHS???WTF. I agree that it's probably the allergies. But if it's not then that's an awfull long time to be walking around with little beasties eating your innerds and multiplying in them. 😱 I'm not surprized you posted the question.

BTW if a worm or two come out your ass while you're on the pot then you might want to return to your doctor before the six months are up. 😉

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Take your pick...

Causes: The mnemonic device CHINA (ie, connective tissue diseases, helminthic infections, idiopathic HES, neoplasia, allergies) describes the categories of diseases that sometimes are associated with blood eosinophilia.

Connective tissue diseases
Churg-Strauss vasculitis
Rheumatoid arthritis
Eosinophilic fasciitis
Eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (due to tryptophan in the United States in 1989)
Toxic-oil syndrome (due to contaminated rapeseed oil in Spain in 1981)
Coccidioidomycosis fungal infection
Helminthic (ie, worm) parasitic infections
Ascariasis
Schistosomiasis
Trichinosis
Visceral larva migrans
Gnathostomiasis
Strongyloidiasis
Fascioliasis
Paragonimiasis
Idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome
Neoplasia
Lymphoma (eg, Hodgkin lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma)
Human T-cell lymphotropic virus I (HTLV-I)
Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL)
Eosinophilic leukemia (very rare)
Gastric or lung carcinoma (ie, paraneoplastic eosinophilia)
Allergic/atopic diseases
Asthma
Allergic rhinitis

A lot of stuff can happen in 6 months...

I would want to know.

🙂

I was under the impression that Pinworm would not cause eosinophilia because it is not an invasive parasite, maybe im wrong.

Ahh.. I didn't say PINworm. I just said "worms". I bet some cause eosinophilia. Look them up an take your pick. 😉 Just curious, and I'll ask this to you sinse you seem knowledgeable in parasitic matters. How many causes of eosinophilia are there that could silently F#ck you up bad if you wait six months before treating? 🙂

More than one.

Some worms definitely can cause eosinophilia, I think i just misread your original statement and was too hasty in making the Worm + Anus = Pinworm connection...a common mistake

Also I would like to point out that because of this thread I looked up hyper eosinophilic syndrome, which is probably what your doctor is screening for by waiting 6 months because if you have it your #'s will still be elevated after that long (and if there is no organ involvement it is usually benign). At any rate, HES was a question on my hematology exam today. So the OP can at least say that some benefit came out of having an eosinophil count of ~3000. 🙂,
