Hello! I'm a veterinarian with an interest in epidemiology. I'm thinking about applying to a masters of public health with a major in epidemiology. Just wondering if anyone has any advice for a veterinarian in this field? I know there are specific veterinary epidemiology programs out there. Although I would prefer to work in animal health it seems as if there aren't as many jobs out there. My logic is if I take a human specific program it will be recognized in the veterinary and human world. Whereas if I take a veterinary specific program it will only be recognized in the animal disease world and will limit my job prospects. Can anyone tell me if this is sound logic or not? Cheers!

Hi! I am a 1st year vet student. I am currently dual-enrolled at University of Alabama at Birmingham and I love the program. However, it tends to focus more on the human side. For what you might be interested in, University of Minnesota offers a very veterinary-focused MPH, while The Ohio State University offers a Veterinary Public Health degree. Many of these programs can be completed remotely as in my case so that may be something to consider! I'd say get into contact with some of the public health coordinators at institutions and they typically are amazing resources. For my school, our coordinator is Dr. Stephanie Ostrowski at Auburn and she was an EIS graduate and served a great deal of her career in the USPHS. Dr. Ragan over at Virginia-Maryland has networked with my school and she worked at the USDA Veterinary Medical Officer program as a veterinary epidemiologist, which is the route I want to go because of her. I hope this helps 🙂 I am only a student starting out but these amazing people would definitely be resources for you!
