I'll preface this by saying that I am really uneducated when it comes to cell phones, so you may have to explain a lot to me 🙂

I'm thinking of getting a smartphone for rotations and need a lot of help. I'd like to stick to Verizon as my whole family is on it and due to issues with reception in rural areas. And it seems like epocrates and lexicomp are the programs that I will most likely need. Are there any options on verizon where you can use a smartphone without getting the data plan and still be able to use these programs? One of my friends got a Palm and said she could access epocrates without the data plan. Is this the full version? (she wasn't sure) Are there any disadvantages to this?

I read in an old thread from 2008 that only Palm and Windows (which phones have windows??) have the full version of epocrates, is this still true? or is it old info?

I thought about getting an Ipod Touch but am unsure about the reliability of wifi around hospitals and outpatient clinics, any thoughts?

I must say, that I tried out blackberry's new phone with the touch screen (can't remember the name at the moment..) and really liked it. I just don't like the idea of spending the extra $30 a month for a data plan as a student.

Thanks for your help!

You can't go wrong with a Blackberry Storm or something like that for rotations if you have to stick with Verizon. All of the smartphones require you to have a data plan though as far as I know.

As for full versions of Epocrates, it doesn't require an internet connection.

It looks like you can buy the palm centro from Verizon without a data plan. It's the same phone that I currently have (Sprint), and I have been satisfied. It can run epocrates. It does not have WiFi.
