Does anyone have recommendations on what I should use to study for EPPP? I am planning to take it in about 3 months. I am currently working with lots of hand-me-down mp3s. I am feeling particularly rusty on Neuropsych, Stats, and I/O (especially since I've never studied the latter before). Considering purchasing the 3-session webinar from Academic Review aimed specifically at those 3 areas. Can anyone vouch for it or make other suggestions on a better way to spend my money? Thanks! 😕

You just need to buy the AR study manuals and purchase access to their test banks for 3 months. As far as the age of the manuals, the rule of thumb is 3 or so years old and they are still good. You can usually find them relatively cheaply on Ebay and Craigslist. You will have to go through AR to purchase the testing center access; however, sometimes people team up with coworkers to buy this

I recommend spending as little money as possible. I got by with some hand-me-down stuff that was 8 years old and spent no money. To each their own...personally I think people overstudy pretty severely for this exam. I did 3 months passive (listening to audio while commuting) and 2 weeks of active study (2-4 hours per day reading and taking notes) right before the exam, kicking it up a notch those last few days more intensely. Took 3 practice tests and failed them all. Passed the test with no problem, aside from my complaints about how poorly worded the exam was.

If you check out other threads about this, you'll notice that people often mention how different the exam is from the study materials. So while you definitely want to study and have some materials, I don't think it is worth much of a financial investment.

How does this work? Do you get access to a limited number of practice tests that can then be split between different people? I'm much more of a cheapskate than an overstudier, so I'll take any way to reduce the cost of this thing that I can get.

I just found a colleague and split the cost of the online access to the tests. For example, if it costs $500 for 3 months of access, we would each pay $250 and share the password. You always have to notify the other person when you're using the test bank so two people aren't trying to log on concurrently with the same password because this may send a red flag to AR

If you don't know anybody who will split the cost with you, put an ad on Craigslist, your state psychological association's listserv or here.

Thanks, this is really helpful. Sounds like the general consensus is that AR test banks are the best way to spend money on test prep, if I'm going to spend money on test prep.

Thanks~ this is extremely reassuring!

It's really frustrating that we are not able to take this exam before we graduate like in law school and med school. I had plenty of time to study the summer before internship. I know lot's of people with 60+ hour postdocs who were unable to find time to study and then had a period of unemployment after postdoc so they could study for 2-3 months. I actually have time right now but I still can't study for it because I don't have my diploma yet from my program. I literally just defended and completed all the requirements but don't have the paper diploma yet. What can I do so far?

Lots of people study and take the exam in a state that allows you to earlier, then transfer their scores later. I don't see why a paper diploma matters when your transcript is the official record.

hmmmm....my state requires the 1500 hours before you can sit for the exam. I have to look into other locations then. Do you have to apply for licensure in other states or can you just sign up for the EPPP to take it there?

I think you apply to get licensed there, so there is a small additional cost. But it is quite common. I live in a state where your 1 year of hours are also required, but know a few people who got licensed in other states to get the EPPP over with, then transferred it over to our state after they got their hours.

Great idea. Thanks 🙂

Maybe others can chime in, but I think you can do this in Kansas and Wisconsin (IIRC, but i never did it myself). I think you can still take the exam at your local testing center too - so it is just a matter of sending in paperwork.

Yes, you can take the exam in any state and have the scores sent to whatever state you are seeking licensure in. For scheduling/timing reasons, I took my EPPP in a nearby neighboring state and set it up to send the scores to the state I actually live & work in. You don't have to sit for the EPPP *in* the state you are seeking licensure in, just make sure you select the proper state where your scores need to be sent. Kansas is an easy state to get licensed in (in terms of what you have to do... 'just' the EPPP). I think Washington state is the same but I'm not 100% certain. So you could sit for the EPPP in whatever state you live in while applying for licensure in Kansas (to get it done with more quickly if your state won't let you take the EPPP yet), then just transfer your scores once you've satisfied all other reqs.
