So, in Kaplan's book the osmotic equation goes pi=MRT but when I applied that same equation to detroyer but its telling me to also multiply by the i (number of particles produced when solute dissolves).
pi=MRTi


Im also having the same issue with freezing point depression and boiling point elevation.

Any suggestions?
 
It is a colligative property which means you have to use the van't hoff factor. the other colligative properties are boiling point elevation and freezing point depression as well as vapor pressure depression all require you to use the van't hoff factor or the "i"

Right, so in this case is Kaplan wrong? 😕

Kaplan just left it out so it is wrong when ever the solute will ionize. so for glucose they are right but for say NaCl they are wrong. It is best to always include it and if the solute does not ionize just use a van't hoff of 1. does that make sense ?
