Just as an aside, as much as it's difficult to staff rural ED's, my friends who are completing EM residencies are finding it tough to find jobs in their urban geography of choice at a salary/rate that they like. There's a significant discount if they do find it. These EM groups are negotiating monsters too.

Just saying... Writing may be on the wall already. All y'all wanting to get into EM may be late...

I'm referencing the above post on this thread:

Thoughts?

I'm confused. So the gist of this is that better not go into EM because there are/won't be no/any jobs?

This seems to be quite the contrary to what almost every other person I've spoken with has told me.

That's the point the OP I quoted was trying to make, and like you, I hadn't heard of such concerns prior to that. Then again, I'm still quite removed from the world of the PGY2/PGY3 job seeker...

I believe he meant FAMILY MEDICINE physicians who want to go into em(that's what the thread was about...in other words em jobs for fp docs are getting scarce....)

No, he specifically referred to friends who had completed EM residencies. However, I don't see this guy as a credible source, other than the fact that yes, jobs in desirable areas are more difficult to get.

There is no shortage of jobs. Jobs are available in every state. As with any profession, the jobs in the "nice" places to live are going to be more scarce than those in rural areas. Additionally the pay is going to be less because the nice jobs don't need to actively recruit people.

Even then, if you look hard enough you can find the area/salary that you want.

Anecdotally I have yet to meet an EM senior who wasn't finding just what he/she wanted. Whether or not this will persist forever is tough to say. Certain markets are always going to be hard to crack.

Once again anecdotally and this time via heresay: one of my friends who had some peripheral contact with a "lower tier" EM residency told me she met several seniors who could not find anything but rural and urgent care jobs.

PGY-4 here in the South with lots of friends who went the 3 year route and are now in practice. No one I talked to had any difficulty finding a job with two people heading out to California. Jobs are still plentiful. As stated above some locations are going to be tougher to practice in than others as is the case in all fields of medicine.

There aren't very many groups out there that aren't hiring or don't plan to at some point in the next 3 years.

if anyone is looking i'm hiring a spot....it consists of 5-6 12 hour shifts a week and on the off day, you may be required to go to a 'conference' that is typically from 8-12. A few months you may have some elective time during which you will be doing maybe some dermatology, some ENT, some Orthopedics.

PM if you want this job.

Same here in Arizona... Tons of jobs in Phoenix, tons of jobs in the rural spots. In tucson there are some academic spots, others are tough cause the groups are making so much $ no one seems to want to leave.

How much are they making? How much can you expect to make in AZ? And what are the hours like? What are the common clinical complaints that you see?

Also if you are a peds ER are there still jobs or just ER

If you're boarded in Peds EM i've got a job for you right now (seriously PM me). That should tell you how that job market is. For boarded EM docs there are still plenty of jobs.

I've said this before but it bears repeating. If you are BC/BE EM you can get a job in pretty much any region you choose and probably any city you choose. You may not be able to get any group you want and smaller cities with fewer positions can be trickier and you may have to take some hits on pay or working conditions or whatever. After you've been out for a few years and have no big problems on your CV you can really go to any city you want.

there is so much subjectivity in that post it makes it almost a non-issue.

salary/rate that they like? I mean, I would like 400/hour. That isn't happening anytime soon.

For ANY field (IM, surgery, ortho, etc) the more desirable the location (aka the more competitive), the less the salary (in general).

Also, appropriate expectations are important.

Thus, if you like EM, there are still plenty of jobs.

If there are, then these dinners that EMP, EmCare, TeamHealth, and the rest keep buying me must be a colossal waste of money for them.
