I did it for three years and it depends on the hospital...I essentially helped the ER docs and RNs even with procedures as well as 12 and 18 lead EKGs, blood sugar tests, UA, specimen handling...and everyone helped change bed sheets etc after the pt....I even saw docs do this..but the ER I worked at most of the time was an acceptation...usually docs do not clean up...we had "Housekeeping" come and clean up the really dirty rooms and any bodily fluids (accept the little spots of blood on the gurney).
That a sweet job. I just have to take that dam EMT course and I will be joining you as a ER tech.
THanks for all the info. , I just dont want to screw up becuz it was so hard to get this job. It took Two months of my cousin Kissing butt to the head nurse to hire me. What shift did most of you guys work? Was it just a weekend job.
these were the available shifts at st. john hospital (local community hospit):
7-7
11-11
2-2
the 2-2 is the sweetest one u can get... it's something about the night crew that makes everything more relaxed and operate more smoothly. too much hyperness and complaining from the morning crews i think. if ur still in school... see if u can get maybe friday evenings or sat., sunday time frames. wont be some bad on u if u have tests next week or so.
right around 11pm'ish... things chill down and EBAY and SDN were my favorite things to look up until 2am comes around 😉

Good point, but the thing is that i didnt have to interview i just got the job thur my cuz...they called me in to write an application and that it I was hired.
ER Tech's duties vary from hospital to hospital. You could be starting IVs, inserting Foleys, bringing patients to radiology/CT, performing CPR on codes, putting lab papers in the charts, registering patients, etc. Who knows!
I was an orderly in the ED during college for a year. Fun!

Mine was Full-Time +++++. My average work week was well over 40 hrs. I did all shifts and when extra hands were needed I once worked 28hrs STRAIGHT (great for the overtime pay). But this was in a very busy SF Bay area ER.

TIP: Go to human recourses and ask for a copy of your official Job Description then after reading/studying it go to your boss (ER manager) and say something like..."I know that my responsibilities officially include X,Y,Z...I just wanted to know how you think I've been doing and if there is anything that I could improve on. " Not only will this impress your boss, you will get a good feel about what you can improve upon. Just be upfront about anything you are not comfortable with doing just yet and practice it until you are.
