After registering with NRMP, to use ERAS for SOAP you must also register for ERAS right? And have applied to programs? How many programs do you have to apply to?

thanks

You don't have to apply to any programs. You just have to have your application in ERAS because SOAP works through ERAS. No app information in ERAS, No SOAP.

I believe the mighty GutOnc might be wrong here. But I'm not sure.

I believe that in order to participate in SOAP, you must apply to at least 1 program prior to SOAP. This is because it is only when you apply to a program that all of your fees get paid -- including your fees for USMLE/COMLEX transcripts, etc. Whether you apply to one program or one hundred, you still get the same number of SOAP applications, and there are no further fees.

What I can't tell is whether you can simply apply in SOAP, and pay the fees then. If you're concerned about this, I would either 1) apply to a single program. Any program. Doesn't matter at all. Then you'll be eligible for SOAP (assuming you meet the other eligibility requirements); or 2) Call ERAS and find out.

If the mightier aPD says I'm wrong...so be it. So say we all.

Seriously though...he's probably right. And sorry to mislead.

Hurry...you've only got 20 hours to figure this out.

"So say we all" and "frack" were the two most annoying things on BSG. I cringed every time.

Thank you aPD and gutonc for your replies.

Just to be clear about SOAP and I am sorry if i sound ignorant, cause i havent used SOAP before, but do we find the unfilled positions on NRMP site and then apply to those programs on ERAS? Seems like a lot of going back and forth between website?

Yes, that's exactly how it works. If you don't match (or incompletely match), then you log into the NRMP web site. You;ll be able to see all of the open spots, sorted by field. You'll switch to ERAS, where you'll be able to apply to programs. I think that ERAS will also highlight programs that are in SOAP, so it should be pretty straightforward.

Thank you. Hopefully I wont have to go through the SOAP.
