Do I need updated letters of rec if I am applying to the same specialty as a PGY2?

They would certainly be more helpful, as they can speak to how you actually are as a resident rather than what your M4 advisors thought you would become. You need a letter from your PD for sure, in any event.

Yes the LOR as a resident would be considered stronger than that of a med student. If you don’t have support from faculty that is a different story. If you have support get them. Hopefully at least one that is recent.
