Hey guys,
I am confused about extracurriculars on ERAS. ERAS states that extracurriculars go under the volunteer section; but then under misc, there is a section for honorary/professional societies. What goes under the "honorary/professional societies" tab? I am confused. If I was the president of AMSA at my school, would I put that under my "volunteer experiences" section because it is an extracurricular or under the "honor/professional socieities?" What if I was just a member of a student group and not an officer, where would I put that then? Help me out, please! Thanks a bunch!

The honorary/professional societies tab is where you list what organizations you have joined--like AMA, AMSA, AMWA--or were invited to join--like Gold Humanism. AOA has its own box where you can indicate if you have been elected. The extracurricular "volunteer" section is where you would indicate that you held an office or were a delegate for any of the organizations/societies you listed. You could also list things like being an officer within your medical school class or student liaison for the curriculum committee, or participation in student interest groups and health fairs. Of course you'd also list more traditional volunteer experiences like Habitat for Humanity or medical mission trips.

This type of categorization within your application isn't going to make or break your application with programs, so please don't allow it to be a high source of stress. We are primarily looking to see that you are a well rounded person with an ability to manage your time well.

Hope this helps.
