Wanted to drop in here, it's Saturday night, I'm tired. Attending is reviewing a potential applicant, and dear Lord. Attending made the comment I think we were both thinking. Let's just say that here potential "assets" to the field just landed her an interview. So keep up the good work, and yes your pic can land you an interview!!!!

Oh yeah, pics or it didn't happen. Well, I ain't getting fired but let's just say 9.5/10 at the minimum.

Profile pic not relevant I hope

Glad to know that counts... at least I will have a leg up if the program director is a female.😉

Wait, you guys don't do this with program directors and current residents when ranking programs??

I thought that applicant pictures were only available to programs after an interview invite is sent...

We hung up a wall with the ERAS pictures of all our applicants.

Some of our residents told our director that the interviews are superfluous. They already have a rank list made. (Our program does not divulge stats or personal statements to current residents and no interviews have yet been conducted)

And while We are talking about it for the love of God please standardize the pictures.

If I see one more profile pic if a guy in a tuxedo at a wedding, or arms crossed with sleeves rolled up, or full body pic of someone trying too hard, it will be the last.

Passport picture, business attire. Is that so hard?

This is good to know. MGH here I come!

Seriously. In this day and age of smart phones, I don't understand why someone can't put on a suit, stand in front of their blank apartment wall and have someone take a nice photo.

Don't even need the whole suit. Just the top and a neutral wall.

And today's front cameras are so good that you could get away with not having anybody else take it.

It'll be a sad day when my age catches up with me and I have to stop using my ERAS pic for everything.

Yes, you could definitely take your own picture, but I find that unless you use a selfie stick that finding a place to set/mount the phone/camera is more trouble than simply having a friend take the shot.

In my fellowship app photo, I've got scrub bottoms on under the suit jacket and blouse. 😉

Mount the camera?? Arm's length, shoot, crop. I have fairly long arms and no friends so that's the best way to get a perfect head/shoulders shot.

My arms are not so long and I have lots of friends, hence my advice.

YMMV. 😉

So we are talking photos of an applicant standing in just the top half of a suit (pants less) in his apartment, holding his "selfie stick". Not sure what kind of operation you guys are running... 🙂
LOL -- while not ideal, it's better than the blurry picture from a wedding with the guest next to them cropped out or the photos in hiking gear we get. Ideally professional photos, passport sized head shot in a suit. Pants optional

No suit, but it IS professionally taken.

Odd. I know for certain that for at least one matching system other than ERAS, programs do not have access to the picture until they have given the green (or red) light for the interview.

Most of my medical students use the photo they took for their hospital IDs. I guess they're given access to the image file. Learning this has made me less judgmental toward photos taken in the white coat. However, a stethoscope around the neck is still an auto-reject.

Selfie stick? Scrub pants?

You'd be better off living under a bridge for a week then getting a bum to take your picture in a garbage can.

I don't know if its something only my school does but all of our photos were taken in the MSB by an actual photographer and we were given instructions about what we had to look like beforehand too lol.

Us too. After a certain test block we had to line up for our "yearbook photo."

Most Caribbean schools don't seem to do this though. I can imagine it would be difficult to get all their students in the same place at the same time seeing as some are in different countries.

I'm torn between going with the above approach, or the one below

The former for sure, minus the crazy eyes. I'm having real problems with the choice of alcohol in the latter photo. You want PDs to think you make good decisions. Go get 'em, dude.
