I will begin applying this July and have a few questions as I begin to get organized and gather info.
I have narrowed my choices of specialty down to two: EM and Anesthesiology.
I have already done my EM rotation but due to rquirements by school I will not be able to do my Anesthesiology elective until Oct. I will be applying to both in July but come October I will pick one or the other and will not interview for both. However I want to get my application in early.
So here are my questions.
1. Does ERAS allow you to submit two personal statements? I want to make sure my statements are specific to EM and Anesthesia.

2. Once I choose a specialty can I withdraw my apps from the other specialty or do I just decline their interviews.

Thanks!

1. You can submit as many personal statements as you want. You can evend send a different one to each program

2. I think you would just have to decline the interviews if you have already sent the applications to programs.

This route is going to cost a lot of $$$. I dont know that much about EM/anesth. but if you are reasonably competitive you might be able to wait until october without hurting your chances of matching too much. Or you could pick the one that you are leaning towards the most and submit those early and then wait and submit the other in october if you change your mind.

That's the way to do it. If they send you interview invites, just e-mail them back and explain that you've decided not to go into that specialty. If they haven't sent out the invites yet, just e-mail them directly whenever you make up your mind. I had a friend last year who did this with IM and EM and just explained that he had decided on IM to the PDs who invited him to EM interviews - it wasn't a problem at all.

All that aside, I can't imagine two more different fields 🙂

Thanks for the replies.
I know they are pretty polar. However, they both involve critical care in certain ways which I do like. I am looking into lifestyle. Before applying to medical school I thought that medicine would be my calling in life. Now I realize that it is just a job. I now have a family and there are many other important things in my life other than medicine. I want to make a good living but don't want to devote my life to it.

It actually won't cost you THAT much more money. If you applied to 40 EM programs, you'll pay $800+ (I can't rmeember how much I paid but it was around there). If you applied to 20 EM and 20 Anesthesia, you'd be paying far far less. It goes by the total # of programs in each specialty.

Good luck! Both programs have their benefits. I am of course partial to EM, but good luck!

Q, DO
