How much does the ERAS and each school you apply to cost?

I am thinking the AMCAS was $150 and then my secondary was $50. I only applied to one school.

The reason I am asking is I talked to a 4th year at my school going into ER and he said he applied to 20 programs. I am trying to have an understanding of what each additional program costs so I don't have sticker shock.

For each number level you apply to, it gets more expensive. I think they might've increased the cost this year, but I'm not totally sure.

20 programs isn't a lot. I applied to 68 -- it came out to an even $2000, and that wasn't the most in the class.

Also, if you rank above a certain number, you have to start paying.

Part of the calculation is also what field you're applying to. For EM, 20 is a little less than the usual (30 or so), so your 4th year probably had the scores and grades to be more selective. 68 is a relatively big number, but Ashers applied to a competitive specialty, which also increases the number of programs you'll apply to.

It's good to try to plan your finances. The key components here are specialty choice and your relative competitiveness for that field. These numbers aren't usually available. But the program director of that specialty at your school will be able to help you gauge your competitiveness and help you figure out how to apply.

Agree with previous posters; additionally if you are applying in a specialty that requires an independent prelim year, you'll likely end up with higher costs than someone applying for a specialty that doesn't. ERAS charges are based on number of programs per specialty and it counts prelim years as a separate specialty.
