Is it best to submit as early as possible or it doesn't matter at all as long as it is submitted before the deadline? This is specifically for derm, of course.

if your app is unlikely to change for the better, then submit early

if you can get a few more papers in, then wait

doesn't really matter for derm as long as it's in before the deadline...most places don't do rolling, since there are relatively "fewer" applications compared to other specialties like IM... most places like to review all apps in their entirety, which is why most interviews in derm usually occur later, even into february....

Like others said, don't miss deadlines, but the only reason to submit early is to get interviews for your prelim programs set. You'll be waiting until Mid-November or later to hear back about derm.
