Hello there much wiser resident physicians/attending physicians,

I was wondering what the process for matching would be in the US vs. matching in Canada for a dual citizen of both countries. I'm accepted to a few medical schools in the US and I'm waiting to hear back from Canada.

If I trained in Canada, and took the USMLE according to schedule, would I be able to submit both residency applications and then choose one over the other? Or am I only allowed one match between both countries?

I vaguely remember hearing that Canada does their matches before the US, and that if you match in Canada, you're automatically withdrawn from the US match...

You are correct. If you are going for canadian match, you are going for the whole ride, and if they rank you, you will be automatically withdrawn from ERAS.

This is a major turn-off for lots of applicants, especially that they might get great interviews in the US, and would want to explore their full choice, but unfortunately, you cannot control it.

Should matching in the US be your main goal, you should not apply to carms.

Best of luck

Thank you!

I guess I will wait and see what happens with my Canadian med school applications. If anything, I'll apply to do a fellowship in the US, if I so happen to match in Canada during CaRMS.

be careful. this may not work as well. Canadian programs are not ACGME accredited, and some American fellowships do not allow you to sit for their boards without having done an ACGME-acc. residency.

Plan carefully. you may end up having to repeat residency in the US if you opt for certain fellowships.

Agree with this. You need to think about where you want to practice long-term. The US can be a bit snobby about accepting other training, even countries like Canada, Australia, or the UK. Ironically it seems to be easier to train in the US and then practice elsewhere. I know it's way early to have to think about this, but you sorta have to based on your question. Not sure who you'd want to talk to about this in more detail.

I looked into a few programs that I would like to apply to potentially, and they all accept Canadian training provided that you've completed the USMLE Steps 1- 3.

I looked at anesthesia programs since I did pain research... maybe some other fellowships like neurosurg or plastics are more selective?

I guess I need to speak with someone about this more extensively.

Thanks for the input guys!

You're welcome.

I will give you a more specific example: Dermatopathology! if you do your residency in Canada, you cannot sit for the american boards of Dermapath.

best of luck in your journey.
