I'm reading his books to see how I developed as an adult from childhood. Anyone have pro or con about his work? I wish I could get psychotherapy longterm (like Woody Allen) but can't afford it. Any one gotten longterm therapy, Fruedian-style?

And you think you need long-term therapy?

Never hurts to analyze yourself to see where you stand & how you can better understand yourself. I figure if I can't help myself feel better on a day to day basis how can I help anyone else. So yes, I sure think it would help me alot to destress myself in my own life.

My therapy during grad school has been longterm dynamic/insight oriented.

Has this helped? I'm really into seeing how I arrived at this point too. Good luck w/ it. :luck:

How would one integrate Erikson's theories into therapy? This is a genuine question. I could see them being useful for normalizing certain struggles. "At your age, it is very common for individuals to be thinking of X,Y, and Z". I'm not sure where I could go beyond that, though.

Once you have insight into how you arrived, then what?

You can find out why you don't feel so well and adjust based on this past. Hey, I know guys like Dr. Phil claim it makes no diff. what/where you came from but it does. If you don't know where you've been how can you know where you're going, and why/how you're going there in the 1st place. Makes sense to me.

In order to help others or understand them it helps to be able to understand your own psyche and what makes you tick or think/do the things you do. It helps you reveal why you feel/react certain ways, how you arrive at feelings and generally ways to make a better diagnostician or counselor or even researcher, as you'll know better what paths to look down based on the leads from your own experiences. Experience is never a waste of time.
