Hey guys -

What's a decent topic for an essay for the application? I wrote an essay for my pre-dental commitee that focused on my volunteer and life experiences that made me decide to become a dentist. Would it be okay to use that as my application essay or is it too generic? 😳

Thanks for any advice! 😀

The personal statement is wide open and the only restriction is the word count. Good statements inform an adcom of why you chose dentistry, your motivation, possible directions that you would like to take your career (community health, etc.), and any other information not contained elsewhere in the application which you regard as being relevant as to why you are a good candidate and will make a great future dentist. It's also important to craft a statement that isn't a shopping list of your academic success and extracurricular activities but rather one that reads in an active voice which fills an adcom in on who you are as an individual. Your pre-dental committee essay sounds like it might fit the bill. I would run it by a few individuals, such as any English tutors, etc. and get some second opinions. Best of luck!
