I'm writing my essay and just thinking about it....I mean the way my life is, I had heavy influences and exposure to the medical field all of my life and I thought that's what I wanted to do, but then I went to off to college and started exploring more with other things just to see, then I did some job shadows with dentistry, went to some open houses with my bro in law and having my bro in law talking about dentistry and such, so with all of that, dentistry interested me way more and I just felt it was the way to go for me, I want to put that in my essay, but I'm afraid if I mention anything medical or that I wanted to be a doctor for the longest time then changed my mind. I'm just afraid of commitee's looking down on me because I mention anything medical, maybe I'm being dumb, but do you think it would be okay? 😱

JUST TELL IT HOW IT IS!! For the longest time I wanted to be a doctor because I broke 6 bones growing up and spent a lot of time in doctors offices. In college I shadowed every type of health professional around and found that dentistry is the way to go. And i explored every aspect of dentistry. Just explain how you chose dentistry and why it is so imporant to you. No one will eat you alive if you mention how you got there. As long as you know the true reasons why dentistry was your choice. Good luck.

Okay that's one opinion. My opinion is that the medicine/physician rivalry is a sensitive issue. If I were you I'd just steer clear of it. Maybe you can mention your past experiences under the light of how they opened your heart to the art of healing?

I disagree. Sometimes what you do NOT write is just as easily read between the lines and says more about you than you might hope. In other words, do not avoid discussing the REAL reasons you chose dentistry over medicine because you are AFRAID that the adcoms will discredit your motives. What will destroy your credibility is even a WHIFF of fence-sitting between medicine and dentistry. If your motives for selecting dentistry over medicine are solid and clear after some deliberation you will have all the advantage over another applicant who is still insecure on the issue. Hinting at healing but ignoring the "elephant in the room" MIGHT (don't jump down my throat here) suggest dentistry was your second choice or that you are still unsure about your decision. My two cents. Just keep it real.

I dont see why you need to mention initially pursuing medicine at all UNLESS your extracurriculars and what not come from pre-med sources. It's a question that is often brought up during interviews and you should have a good answer then. WHOEVER reads your essay is going to breeze through it, and then make an assumption about you. I dont think you want them thinking about whether or not you really want to be a dentist over a medical doctor...I guess that's all moot if you can UNQUESTIONABLY prove your devotion to dentistry over medicine. Shadowing, going to open houses, and being influenced by your bro-in-law isn't that great of an argument. Besides, if it's something to debate over, it's probably not that good of a thing. Some people will like it, some won't. Same with admissions committees.
