I just spoke with a dental student at UCSF with same ethnicity as me, Korean. He said I have a slim chance of getting into UCSF (or other california school) because of my ethnicity. I really thought if I do well on DAT I would pbb get into a california school. I have 3.5 overall, 3.6 science GPA, and I am really worried. He said that even though average GPA for UCSF is 3.7, but the average among Koreans (Asians pbb) is near 3.9, and minimum 3.7.

Ignore him. He's bragging about his own success, not suggesting that you can't get in.

with a decent resume, a blue person can get in. this is sf ur talking about...most of the class is blue, green, and all the other colors of the rainbow..give urself a lil more credit..ur more than ur race--this whole app process is stressful and nerve-racking but if u have the grades and extracurriculars, dont worry about things u cant control like the color of ur skin

hey there, don't know who you could've been talking to..

i don't think it's because of your ethnicity that you'd have to get a higher gpa, it's higher overall for everybody at ucsf. the stats were pretty good across the board for our d1's regardless of ethnicity. though the white students, especially the mormons, seem to be kicking major butt 😛

i'm one of about nine koreans this year, a pretty good number of us overall. hah, i'm one of the more average students! all i can say is that you'll never know know unless you give it a shot 😎

Have you ever thought that with only a few koreans enrolled that they just happened to have a high GPA that it had nothing to do with the fact that there was a hidden rule of thumb that koreans need to have a higher GPA?

Ditto.

It's not like you have to try harder based on your ethnicity. Why should they judge you like that? It's not like Koreans are smarter than the average students there and they would have to raise your standards. Your friend's probably trying to make himself feel better and special for being Korean at UCSF.

I'm Indian, and UCSF is full of us 😀 I had a much lower GPA than a 3.7 and I received an early interview. But I did not get in, hmmm maybe there is a conspiracy????

All schools care about are:
1) Whether you have the smarts (stats) to handle the rigors of dental school
2) Whether you have the interest/passion for dentistry
3) Whether you are well-rounded, personable, and mature enough to be able to one day handle/empathize with patients from all walks of life.

...and according to PDizzle, 4) If you are dead sexy. LOL.
