Hi All,

I just stumbled upon this website and am so appreciative of the information I've discovered. It's good to know I'm not alone in this process. 🙂

I've had a serious time considering which pharmacy school I would like to attend. Bluegrass music and old time music is one of my biggest passions (other than pharmacy of course 🙂)

I am greatly considering ETSU's Pharmacy program and would love some input on it from y'all. I absolutely love Johnson City and have friends that live in the area. I'm not worried about JC at all, but am curious as to the reputation of ETSU's pharmacy program. I know that their accreditation will be complete once their first class graduates in a few years.

Is it hard to study there? I think I could manage to stay focused enough to study even though there's a lot of bluegrass and old time music there.

Anyway, just curious as to what any of the current PharmD students at ETSU (or anyone at all) think. I want to apply early decision and this is the only thing that's holding me back right now.

By the way, I do plan on practicing in that area and am greatly considering opening up a community pharmacy. I really enjoy rural medicine.

Thanks in advance,

Courtney

I'm applying to ETSU also. If you use the search function and search with several combos of ETSU, there are several good threads with info of pros and cons of this school.

HI, I am a P3 at ETSU now. I love it in Johnson City. I moved from GA to attend ETSU and I wouldn't change a thing. We now have our new building open which has totally changed the dynamic of the campus. We have plenty of study rooms and huge lecture rooms. If you know anything about how hard being in the inaugural class is you will know this is a welcomed building. The only thing I adjusted to was going to school in the snow. In GA the town shut down for snow but we suffer all the weather here. The price of living is reasonable and there are plenty of apartments in the area. Don't worry, there isn't much bluegrass music on campus to distract you while you study..just kidding! I love it too! Overall, I think we are working out the kinks being in the first class and the program is progressing well. We made Candidate Status which really puts a lot of fears to rest. You should definitely apply here. I think you will love it too.

I'm also considering applying to ETSU, but just be aware that they accept only "14% of students outside of the Appalachian region of TN, NC, VA, KY". This is great if you're from that are, but if you're like me (I live in the piedmont of NC, for example) then you would face harder chances.

Hey thanks so much for the reply PharmBug! I'm so glad to hear you enjoy the program and the area. I've heard nothing but good things about it from everybody, and I am excited to say that my application should be mailed by PharmCas to ETSU on Monday. 🙂

I know that the percentage of accepted students from outside the Appalachian area is pretty small, but I am hoping that they will take into consideration that I want to practice in that area. I lived just north of Nashville for a little over a year and that is how I found out about ETSU and the Tri-Cities area. I instantly fell in love with it.

I'll give it my best shot and see what happens. It's all I can do. 🙂

Don't let percentages discourage you from applying. There are people in my class from Nashville, the mountains of NC and as far as Indiana. Our mission statement is along the lines of community pharmacy advocacy. If you get an interview just go in there and let them know all about you and your goals. I have helped out on the admissions and I don't think the region you live in is what they are putting the most emphasis on. They want to see if you fit at ETSU and the missions of our school. Good Luck!!

Gosh, thank you so much. You have no idea how much your reply helped calm my fears. I'm really excited about the possibilities that lie ahead, and I hope I get the opportunity to share my goals with the admissions committee in the near future. 🙂

I was reading the SDN board about interviews at various schools and didn't see ETSU listed. Has anyone been through the interview process at ETSU? If so, what was it like? What kind of questions did they ask you? Just curious.

Thanks

I'm trying to get in as well I'm in the early decision group right now but no one has called for an interview so I suppose I'll not get one 🙁 since there is only 8 more days till they have to give a decision.

Out of curiosity were you all from Johnson city or somewhere else?

I interviewed at ETSU last year, and was accepted. I don't remember a huge amount about the interview, but for one key thing: my interviewers did NOT look at my file before my interview. And they barely skimmed through it during the interview. My biggest piece of advice is that if you have anything about your academic or personal history you feel you need to explain face to face, you have to have the guts to bring it up. They asked me if there were any grades that needed an explanation, but I felt reasonably comfortable with my GPA so I shrugged and said "not really, my grades aren't perfect, but I worked hard for them, and I deserved every grade I got."

Mainly questions were pretty predictable, why do I want to go into pharmacy, what experience have I had so far with it, what are my strengths and weaknesses, etc.

As a previous poster mentioned, the emphasis there is on rural community pharmacy, so don't go blabbin about how NYC is such an amazing city and it is your life's dream to live and work there, LOL. Just be able to talk about what community means to you, and very importantly, what the pharmacist's role in the community should be.

PS. For reference, I grew up and lived on the Cumberland Plateau at the time I interviewed, so I was from the target region. I had a 3.33 GPA and a 95% PCAT percentile.

I hope this thread isn't dead yet! I have applied to Wingate and ETSU and have recently got accepted to both. Now I am faced with a very difficult decision. Did anyone out there apply to Wingate as well as ETSU? I know this has to be my own decision, but I'm struggling with it at the moment!

hey!! i hope this thread isn't dead either, but i really need to know more about the school. any pharmd students out there??? are you guys TRULY happy??? i'm an out of state student, so i want to really make sure i'm goign to the right school. like honestly, i really don't know why i applied there. i mean i was impressed with the school when i went and the fact that it has acquired canidate status. they also have a great joint with it's medical school, awesome hands on experience (the life like dummies). apparently, rhode island is the only other school with such hands on experience. forreal? like, i mean..i totally understanding of serving the rural area and helping out there while in school, but i feel like... i don't think that's where my heart is "after" pharmacy school. from what i perceive, the school is looking for students who are willing to stay in that area and practice. i want to make sure i'm making a decision that's from the heart. plus, give the spot to students really want to be at ETSU.

Well here are the before and after stats for March and April... No more seats..

For those of you who are students of ETSU; I just got a interview invite today. What's the closest airport to fly into? I need to by a ticket asap. Is it TRI (tri cities). Are there any other options? Also, how far is the airport to the school?
