Received an interview offer. However, I'm also going to be rotating at that particular program. They offer complimentary hotel stay the night before the interview - is it okay to use this or would it be considered inappropriate if I'm going to be using their housing option provided? Thanks for the replies.

If you already have a place to stay the night before why would you go to a hotel?

Agree. If your place is within 1 hour driving of the interview site (and is not undergoing any renovation around the time of your interview, other extenuating circumstance, etc), then the answer is pretty clear cut.

If you tell the coordinator that you already have a place to stay, then at best you'll come off as thoughtful and polite, at worst you won't get a reaction.

If you tell the coordinator please book a hotel, then at best you won't get a reaction, at worst you'll come off as impolite and wasteful.

Oh yeah, and also, what if you're unlucky and the hotel room you get has bedbugs or something unexpected happens when you're at the hotel? If there is nothing wrong with your current place, then stay there !!! Familiarity and predictability = peace of mind over 1 less thing to worry about. And that is worth not getting the complimentary night of hotel stay.

If you already have a place to stay the night before why would you go to a hotel?

Yeah, those are good points. I just wasn't sure if they wanted us to stay at the hotel for pre-dinner purposes or not. I'll just let them know that I won't be staying the night at the hotel. Thanks for the replies.

Most of the time, the pre-dinner is held at a separate bar/restaurant, or at someone's house (an attending, the PD, a resident).

My home program booked a night at a hotel for me before my interview. I wrote back and explained that I didn't need it since I live a few minutes from the hospital. Apparently somebody in the office didn't notice. 🙄
