If I submit my application in early June, secondaries won't come until August, leaving July free, correct? I want to go to Europe for 3 weeks sometime this summer and am thinking July will probably be my best (or only) bet, but I wanted to verify with people who know this process better than I do before solidifying plans.

Thanks. 🙂

unless of course you get stuck studying to retake the MCAT in August.....

yeah, it's definately all about the MCAT. hope you don't have to take it again, but then again you might have already been done with it. but i'm goin in june-july... gluck!

If you submit your application in early June, you should definitely be receiving secondaries in July. I didn't submit AMCAS until July and I still received a few secondaries in July. Time your trip to Europe so that you go right after you submit AMCAS. Although as long as you complete your secondaries sometime in August, you're still going to be pretty early.

P.S. Make sure your LORs/committee letter are all set before you leave... that's what usually holds applications up.

Yup, that's what I did...I left right after amcas. If you are very concerned about it pick your top few schools, and find out if most of them have the same secondary essay questions year after year. Then you can prepare them ahead of time or on the train or something in europe, and you can fill them out immediately when you get home. I wasn't travelling when I was abroad, so I was able to start writing and/or sending out the internet secondaries, and somebody back home opened my mail to tell me which ones I received in the mail and to start working on those essays.

Yeah, I agree that going right after submitting my application would be ideal, but unfortunately a couple of the people I'll be going with can't leave until early July. Writing as many of my secondaries ahead of time is a great idea.

As for the MCAT, I took it this past August and got a 29, and am retaking it in April because I froze at the actual test and scored much lower than all of my practice tests indicated I would. If I don't increase my score in April I'm just going to suck it up and keep my 29, thus taking the MCAT again in August isn't an issue.

Thanks for the replies. 🙂
