Has anyone been able to have her come in for a lecture at your school? She is a stage IV oral cancer survivor. She went to her dentist with a small lesion on her tongue. Both the dentist and oral surgeons for the next year or so kept saying it was nothing and it finally turned out to be stage IV cancer.

Anyway, she travels nationally and talks about the experiance. I thought her lecture was very interesting. I know Tufts students heard from her (from the website), nd she is going out to UoP and UCSF in april.

just wondering who else has heard from her and what did you guys think?

Sounds interesting... anyone know how to go about getting her to come speak at your dental school?

Yeah I was at her presentation at Tufts and I enjoyed it a lot. She was very moving and gave a very compelling first hand account as to how someone deals with cancer. It doesn't take a lot of time, so there's no reason why everyone shouldn't be screening for oral cancer. You may end up saving a life one day. 🙂

We had Brian Hill give a presentation here a week or so ago. He is an oral cancer survivor and founder of the oral cancer foundation. Probably one of the most compelling and charismatic speakers I have seen in a looong time.

He didn't talk about the experience so much as what he is trying to do to better the situation. The idea that the HPV virus is linked with oral cancer is a bit of an eye-opener which seems pretty reasonable given the younger/non-smoker demographics developing cancer.

The theme was that we should be catching these things. Takes no more than 5 minutes to screen a patient.

I think he was going to be on a few talk shows in the near future..but I can't remember when/where.

Brian Hill was indeed a great speaker; you can check his story here http://www.oralcancerfoundation.org/about/brianhill.htm
