On the areas needing improvement my evaluation had " broaden your knowledge base". I got great other comments but this is my "negative" comment. I'm an intern and know that I still have a long ways to go and need to keep learning and reading but for those of you who have gotten residency evaluations comments... is this really bad. Should I be worried?

If that's the worst comment you get as an intern, consider yourself pretty lucky.

That's not a bad comment at all. I can't believe that you never got the "Needs to read more" comment as a med student.

Just curious, but can you use an evaluation form in place of a recommendation letter when applying to residency programs? On average, how many recommendation letters do you need for a residency application?

No.

On average, how many recommendation letters do you need for a residency application?

Four. But many programs specify WHO they want you to write a letter (i.e. one has to be from the chairman, one has to be from an attending in that specialty, etc.)

What? No.

3 is the minimum, 4 is the maximum (although you can have as many in ERAS as you want, you can only send 4 to any one program). Different specialties and programs will have different requirements. Some (like most IM programs) will want a chair's letter and will expect one from your SubI. Others (EM) want very specific types of letters (SLORs) that can only be obtained from attendings at programs with EM residencies.

In general, you're going to have a problem with having too many LORs, not too few. I had 6 and had to figure out how to dole them out.

Nope. But if you have a particularly strong eval from an attending, why not ask him/her to write you a letter?

BTW, there's a certain format that LORs come in...and with that, comes a certain "code." For example, "I give [name] my highest recommendation," or "it is without reservation that I recommend [name]," or "we would love to keep [name] at our program and will be ranking him/her highly."

How embarassing. Isn't the whole point of this to be a "lifelong learner"? You may need two lifetimes.

Medicine will not wait for slow people.

Pardon my narcissism, that is all.

I'm curious...which is the best code here? I'm guessing it's "I give [] my highest recommendation without reservation. We would love to keep [] at our program and will be ranking him/her to match.

There are actually a couple understood systems of code for this. Some would argue that wanting to keep any given applicant in one's own program is a great sign. Others use the gradation system of "I give my highest recommendation," over "I give a very strong recommendation," over "I give a strong recommendation," etc.

Then there's "I give my recommendation without reservation," etc.
